The University of Sioux Falls wrapped up their first-ever Northern Sun Conference Championship with 34 All-Conference finishes and four individual conference titles in Mankato, Minn. over the weekend.
Each student-athlete that competed in the finals of their respective event was recognized with all-conference honors.
The Cougar women finished third place overall with a score of 92 points, while the men finished in fourth place with 89 points.
On Friday, Jazzelena Black blew away the competition in the long jump when she leaped 19-7 (5.97m) to meet NCAA automatic qualifying standards. Black separated herself from the field by nearly a half-foot. On Saturday, Black followed Friday's effort with a record-setting mark in the triple jump. She soared 40-7.5 (12.38m) to set a school and conference record, and also clinch and NCAA automatic bid for the triple jump.
"For Jazzelena to hit automatic marks in both the Long and Triple Jump as a freshmen is just amazing," said first-year head coach Reid Ehrisman. " In the Long Jump, she didn't jump great in the prelims, but thanks to her perseverence and mental toughness she was able to get an amazing jump on one of her final attempts in the finals."
Kristen Townley earned all-conference honors today with a in fifth place finish in the triple jump. Her mark also of 38-2.25 (11.64m) also met provisional qualifying standards.
Lindsey Elston also earned all-conference honors with a seventh place (17-6.25) finish in the women's long jump.
In the women's Pole Vault, USF dominated the field they took six of the top seven spots and came away with 31 points from the event. Brigitte Gross led the way for the Cougars, vaulting 12-10 (3.91m) on her way to a first place finish. She was followed by teammate Kayla Coffee who finished in a tie for second place with a vault of 12-6 (3.81m).
"To be able to compete with this success at the DII level says a a lot about the caliber of our program and the dedication and hard work that our athletes have put in. I'm proud of what these women have done, and to see how far this part of our program has come is very exciting," said Ehrisman.
Kristin Majerus and Chelsey Schenavar came in fourth and fifth place respectively with their vaults of 12-6 (3.81m). Samantha Koch and Courtney Crandall also earned all-conference honors with their vaults of 12-00 (3.66m).
Kendra Knight ran a 57.24 in the 400m Dash finals on her way to a third place finish. Knight was also a member of the fourth place 4x400m relay, which finished in 3:56.42. Other relay members included Leah Wensmann, Haley Kruger, and Ashley Evers.
In the 5000m Run, Sierra Harder was the fourth competitor to finish the race when she crossed the finish line in 18:03.85.
After setting a school record in the preliminaries, Brigitte Gross also improved her mark in the 60m hurdles where she finished in fifth place with a school record time of 8.79.
Hannah Steele earned all-conference honors in the shot put with a seventh place with a throw of 42-11.75 (13.10m).
USF's women's Distance Medley Relay, which was made up of Becca Steadman, Conner Anderson, Shelbie Pettie, and Sierra Harder, finished in sixth place with a time of 12:42.60.
The Cougar men also fared well in their first conference meet.
Colin Koth became the NSIC Conference runner-up in the 400m Dash when he completed the race in 48.91 seconds.
Blake Stevenson ran a 1:57.45 in the 800m Run on his way to a fifth place finish.
The men's distance medley relay (Blaze Killian, Colin Koth, Kyle Tibke, Blake Stevenson) finished in second place with a time of 10:14.78, actually beating out a conference meet record. Their mark and also met provisional standards.
Bobby Brockmueller received his second all-conference honor in the 1,000 me race. He placed second in the finals with a time of 2:31.28.
Billy Brockmueller also earned all-conference plaudits in the 3000m Run Friday night. On Saturday, he claimed fourth (15:06.16) in the 5000m Run.
Ryan Maloney took fifth place in the men's 60m (8.48) Hurdles finals Saturday afternoon.
USF also captured third in the 4x400m relay (Brady Velgersdyk, Kaleb Stevens, Kyle Tibke, and Colin Koth) with a 3:21.61.
Some of USF's highest finishes came in the field. USF took three of the top four spots in the men's pole vault competition. The Cougars were led by freshmen vaulters in Jagger Gran and Scott Greenman, who finished first and third, respectively with a 4.94m clearance. Andrew Ellsworth also earned all-conference honors when he finished fourth with a vault of 4.79m.
"We have never had two guys in the same competition vault 16-feet, and for it to be two freshmen is even more amazing," added Ehrisman.
Kaleb Stevens finished in seventh in the long jump with a leap of 22-6.5(6.87m), while
Nathan Bridgman became the conference runner-up in the triple jump when he went 46-8.25(14.23m). Bridgman's jump met provisional qualifying standards.
Jordan Bents earned all-conference honors in both the shot put and weight throw. In the shot put, Bents took fifth with a throw of 51-3 (15.62m), and claimed a fourth place spot (56-2.5) in the weight throw on Saturday.
"I'm proud to be a Cougar and it's exciting to take part in our first conference meet in the NSIC. Our athletes came in and faced the new level of competition without any intimidation, and competed very hard until the end."
