Jazzelena Black, Kayla Coffee and Brigitte Gross each placed in the top eight of their respective events today to earn All-American status on day two of the NCAA DII Indoor Championships.
On the women's side, the No.11 Cougars currently rank third in the overall team standings with 12 points.
Total, six Sioux Falls' student-athletes competed in Birmingham, Ala., five in a final, and one in a preliminary race Friday afternoon.
Gross led four Cougars in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 13' 7.25" (4.15m) to place fourth overall and add five points to USF's team score. Kayla Coffee also locked up All-America plaudits, as she maxed out with a vault of 12' 11.5" (3.95m) to finish sixth in the field and provide three additional points for the Cougars.
Kristin Majerus, who cleared 12' 1.5" (3.70m), just missed All-America recognition as she would tie Amy Hop of Grand Canyon for ninth. Unfortunately, Chelsey Schenavar, USF's fourth pole vault entry, suffered a leg injury after landing awkwardly during one of her initial attempts. The injury prevented her from continuing competition.
Black joined Coffee and Gross with an All-American performance in the women's long jump. She soared 19' 4.75" (5.91m) to place fifth overall, the highest of any freshman or sophomore in the field, to earn the Cougars four points towards their overall team score.
Colin Koth was the lone Cougar to compete on the men's side today. Running in the men's 400m preliminary round, Koth clocked a 48.91 for fourth place in his heat. However, the qualifying time for finals would be 46.88-47.60, meaning he will not advance to tomorrow's final race.
Katlyn Sawtelle, Jagger Gran, Scott Greenman and Jazzelena Black will be in action Saturday, for day three of the championships. Sawtelle will get things started around 10 a.m. in the women's pentathlon, while freshman duo, Gran and Greenman, will look to earn USF's men their first points in the pole vault, which is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Black is schedule to compete in her second event, the triple jump, also scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
