Greenman NSIC Newcomer of the Year; Six Cougars Selected for NCAA Championships

Sioux Falls track and field received word from the conference office Tuesday that Scott Greenman was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men's Track and Field Newcomer of the Year and that six Cougars were selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships held May 23-25 at the Neta & Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colo.

Greenman earned the conference award after winning the NSIC men's pole vault title last Saturday, when he leaped 16-8.75 to set a new school record. His clearance was eight inches higher than the program's previous mark.

A testament to USF's dominance in the pole vault this season, five of the six student-athletes invited to the NCAA Championships are vault specialist.

USF's men's pole vault unit, who placed three in the top-five of the conference championship, will send two vaulters to the national meet. Jagger Gran (16-4.75), who won the NSIC pole vault title and Newcomer of the Year award during the indoor season earlier this year, will join Greenman in Pueblo.

Both Gran and Greenman also competed in the 2012 Indoor Championships, where they finished 10th and 11th respectively.  This time around Greenman is seeded eighth, while Gran is seeded 16th out of 20 in the field.

The No. 24 lady Cougars earned four tickets to the championships, three also coming in the pole vault competition. This was no surprise as Brigitte Gross (13-5.75), Kayla Coffee (13-2.25) and Kristin Majerus (12-11.75) each met NCAA automatic qualification during the regular season.

Most recently the trio claimed the top three spots in the women's pole vault at the NSIC Championships. Coffee brought home the title, and Gross and Majerus tied for second. Gross will enter nationals seeded the highest of the group, fourth, followed by Coffee and Majerus who are seeded fifth and eighth respectively.

It also marks the second trip to nationals this year for Gross, Coffee and Majerus. Gross and Coffee earned All-American status after placing fourth and sixth respectively at the indoor meet. Majerus just missed indoor All-American honors, finishing ninth.

Jazzelena Black represents USF's lone non-vaulter invited to the outdoor championships. She is also the only student-athlete invited for two events. Black, who picked up her second-straight NSIC title in the women's long jump last weekend, will be competing in both the long jump (19-6.75) and triple jump (40-6). She enters the championships ranked 13th in the long jump and 12th for the triple.

Black also earned All-American honors at the indoor championships, where she placed fifth in the long jump.
