SIOUX FALLS – Earning their first win of the season, University of Sioux Falls Swimming cruised to a 165-93 win over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent University of Mary on Thursday night. USF posted the top time in 12 of the 14 events, led by
Maike Doerr's three individual titles.
Doerr continued her dominance against U-Mary – she won all three of her individual races in last year's dual – posting three titles that showcased her versatility and endurance. After helping teammates
Gigi Bario,
Chantal Kasch and
Ingelin Lima to a near-six second victory (4:06.42) in the 400-yard medley relay, Doerr led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 freestyle. Doerr clocked a 1:59.40 and was followed by
Evelyn VanDeMark (2:00.67) and
Jenna Krahn (2:00.82) in second and third, respectively, and Sydney Saddoris (2:02.38) in fifth.
Following two quick 100-yard events and less than a five-minute break, Doerr returned to the pool and won the 200 butterfly in 2:16.83.
Alex Sanchez Clark, who won the first individual event of the meet, the 1650 freestyle, in come-from-behind fashion in 17:59.23, took second in the 200 fly at 2:19.23 and VanDeMark scored again with a fourth-place finish at 2:21.25. Returning to the pool for the final individual event, Doerr posted the top time in the 400 individual medley at 4:42.42.
Two other members of the winning medley relay squad recorded two victories each in their respective individual events. Kasch led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:10.94, while
Brie Lavelle (1:12.03) and
Tori Bailey (1:12.92) placed second and third. The medley relay anchor, Lima won the 50 free in decisive fashion with a 24.87-second time then captured the 100 fly title in 59.18 seconds.
Swimming the backstroke leg on the winning medley relay, Bario recorded two runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 back events, getting out-touched by fractions of a second in each. Bario clocked a 1:00.29 in the 100 back and a 2:12.54 in the 200 back, losing by just .02 second.
Jenna Krahn won the 100 free, leading four Cougars in the top five. Krahn captured the title in 55.00 seconds,
Maddie Donohue (56.36) took third, Bailey (56.93) placed fourth, and
Lauren Gallick (58.39) finished fifth.
Following a third-place time in the 1650 freestyle,
Nina Groene cruised to a five-second victory in the 500 free. Following Groene's 5:16.52 winning time, VanDeMark was second in 5:21.30 and Sanchez Clark took third at 5:22.37.
Along with Krahn, Lavelle,
Michelle Hoffin and Bailey's runner-up time of 4:12.20 in the 400 medley relay, USF posted the top two times in the 400 freestyle relay. Lima, Groene, Bailey and Krahn posted the top time at 3:42.65 and Van De Mark, Lavelle, Gallick and Donohue finished second in 3:47.53.
The Cougars return to the deck on Nov. 18 when they host crosstown rival Augustana at the Midco Aquatic Center at 11 a.m.
