WINONA, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (3-3, 3-3 NSIC) recorded its third win in four matches with a 4-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference decision over Upper Iowa (2-4, 1-4 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars picked up three wins in singles and added the doubles point with conquests in two of the three matches in that segment as they defeated UIU for a second straight season.
Against Upper Iowa, USF had singles wins by
Victoria Ambrosio-Cueto at No. 4,
Joelle Thorfinnson at No. 5 and
Kelsie Sanders at No. 6 all in straight sets. Ambrosio-Cueto moved to 2-1 on the year while Thorfinnson is now 4-1 and Sanders is at 2-2 this season.
Due to the seven-point scoring rule, the singles matches at No. 1 in which
Chloe Jefferies was leading and No. 3 in which
Lexi Miller trailed, were stopped after three singles wins clinched the match for the Cougars.
Also for USF, the Cougars had victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Miller and Thorfinnson improved to 1-2 on the season with a 6-4 win. Ambrosio-Cueto and Sanders stayed perfect at 3-0 in doubles with their 6-1 victory.
"I was really pleased with our performance this weekend," said USF Head Coach
Kevin Grebin, whose team will host Augustana, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth on March 1-3 at the Huether Family Match Pointe. "We had some strong efforts from our doubles teams and our singles play was strong again today with wins by Victoria (Ambrosio-Cueto), Joelle (Thorfinnson) and Kelsie (Sanders)," he added.
