Led by strong effort in singles play, USF Tennis Team record 4-3 win over Millersville

ORLANDO, FLA. – With outstanding play in singles, the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (4-3) ended a three-game slide with a 4-3 victory against Millersville (3-9) on Thursday afternoon.

After the Cougars mustered a victory in just one of the three doubles matches, they rebounded with a dominant effort in singles and won four of six matches. Leading the way was redshirt sophomore Chloe Jefferies with a straight-set win over Katina Jones, 6-0, 6-0. In moving to 6-4 on the season, Jeffries picked up her fourth straight-set win. It was the second time this year that she won all 12 games contested over two sets.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Megan Quandt ran her record to 5-6 on the season as she won in straight sets over Jasmines Morris, 6-4, 6-2. She also picked up her fourth straight-set victory this season. USF also registered a singles win with freshman Victoria Ambrosio-Cueto at No. 4 as she defeated Corinne Grohoski, 6-3, 6-0. In moving to 3-5 on the season, Ambrosio-Cueto had her second straight-set win in her young career at USF. The Cougars also had a singles win by sophomore Joelle Thorfinnson at No. 5. Thorfinnson, who improved to 5-4 on the season, recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Victoria Hanus. She also recorded her team-leading fifth straight set victory. At No. 6 singles, junior Kelsie Sanders lost in a tiebreaker as she fell to 2-6 on the season. After winning the opening set at 6-3, Sanders lost the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker, 10-5 to Lauren Weaver.

USF also picked up a in at No. 2 doubles as Miller and Thorfinnson improved to 4-3 on the season with a 6-2 victory.

"While we had some struggles in doubles, we really rebounded with a strong effort in singles play," said USF Head Coach Kevin Grebin, whose team will face Mount Holyoke College on Friday to wrap up USF's spring break schedule. "I thought our intensity and effort was outstanding in singles. We made some adjustments and picked up an important victory," he said.
