SIOUX FALLS – In a dominating effort, the University of Sioux Falls Women's Tennis Team (7-8, 6-5 NSIC) recorded a sweep in weekend matches with an important 7-0 decision over Minnesota State (5-15, 3-7 NSIC) as the regular season wrapped up on Sunday at the
Huether Family Match Pointe.
With the victory against MSU and a 5-2 win over SMSU on Saturday (March 30), the Cougars, which has won three of their last four matches, clinched at least the sixth seed in the upcoming NSIC Tourney on April 13-14. As things stand, USF is tied with Bemidji State for sixth in the league standings. If BSU and USF win on Sunday, USF holds the tiebreaker due to a 4-1 win earlier this year.
USF, which has been victorious in four of the last six league contests, won all six singles matches and also picked up the doubles point with wins in in all three doubles matches. Both
Chloe Jefferies and Joelle
Thorfinnson recorded their fourth consecutive singles win and in dominating straight set manner. At No. 1 singles, Jefferies, who improved to 9-4 on the season and 6-3 in league play, rolled past MSU's Erin Street, 6-2, 6-0. This weekend, Jefferies won 24-of-28 games contested at No. 1 singles.
Thorfinnson moved to 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in league play after registering a 6-2, 7-2 victory over MSU's Valerie Breshahan at No. 5 singles. USF also had a win by
Lexi Miller (3-9 on the season – 3-6 in the NSIC) at No. 3 singles as she rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over MSU's Tyanna Washa. Miller won 24-of-33 contested games this weekend.
In the match of the day, sophomore
Megan Quandt registered a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7) decision against Monika Ryan of MSU at No. 2 singles. With the victory, Quandt is now 6-8 overall and 5-5 in NSIC play. USF also had a straight-set win from
Victoria Ambrosio-Cueto, who defeated Camila Ojeda of MSU, 6-1, 6-3. She ran her record to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. At No. 6, sophomore
Rachel Klatt also picked up a straight set win with a 7-5, 6-4 decision against Lauren Goth of MSU. As a result, she is now 1-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.
In doubles, USF was also strong at all three spots. Jefferies/Thorfinnson moved to 2-0 on the season at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 decision. The Cougars also had a 7-6 (7-2) win by Miller and Quandt at No. 2 doubles as they improved to 2-1 as a team. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 USF doubles team had a strong weekend with wins in both matches. At No. 3 doubles, Ambrosio-Cueto and Klatt paired in doubles for the first time and registered a 6-2 decision.
"I was exceptionally pleased with the fight, toughness and team play we exhibited this weekend," said USF Head Coach Kevin
Grebin, whose team qualified for the NSIC Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons. "It was really great to see the team play with so much confidence in both matches. Today against MSU, they really stood up and showed what they are capable of doing. We look forward to another opportunity to compete at the league tournament," he added.
