WINONA, MINN. -- The sister tandem of
Joelle Thorfinnson and
Danielle Thorfinnson earned singles wins but a strong performance by the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team fell a little short in a 5-2 setback to Winona State on Friday night in Winona, Minn. As a result the Warriors opened the season with a victory and USF fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in NSIC play.
In her first win as a member of the USF Tennis Team, freshman
Danielle Thorfinnson recorded a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Audrey Delich of Winona State at No. 4 singles. Then at No. 5 singles, her sister, senior
Joelle Thorfinnson won a three-set decision by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 result against Brooke Jorgensen. Freshman
Talia Janos battled Rachel Kelly before falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 2 singles and
Lexi Miller at NO. 3 had a solid outing before falling 6-3, 5-7, 10-3. USF lost the double point by falling in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles but the No. 1 team of
Megan Quandt and
Talia Janos had their first win as a team by a 6-3 decision against WSU's No. 1 team of Beth Murman and Audrey Delich.
"I was very happy with our effort and the way we battled all day," said USF Tennis Coach
Kevin Grebin, whose team is scheduled to host Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Feb. 20-21 at the Huether Family Match Pointe. "It was great to see Danielle (Thorfinnson) earn her first win. And Joelle (Thorfinnson) had a nice victory at No. 5. But the entire group played hard and stay focused throughout the competition against a team that was picked to finish third in the NSIC. We were really close today," said Grebin, whose team was picked fifth in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll.
