USF Tennis moves to 3-0 with a 5-2 NSIC win over St. Cloud State on Sunday

Cougars now sit tied for 1st in the NSIC with a 2-0 record after the first weekend of league play

DULUTH, MINN. – The University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (3-0, 2-0 NSIC) recorded its third straight win to open the season with a 5-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference decision over St. Cloud State (2-2, 2-1 NSIC) on Sunday (Feb. 13).

With the victory, USF is now 2-0 and tied for first in the NSIC with Augustana, U-Mary and Southwest Minnesota State. It is the third time in five years that the Cougars have started 3-0.

"I am really pleased with the performance of the team this season," said USF Head Coach Kevin Grebin, who now has 81 wins in the DII era with 57 in NSIC play. "We were consistent, aggressive and played strong through these two matches, added Grebin, whose team will face Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 19 (4 pm) and Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday, Feb. 20 (7 am).

Leading the way for USF was senior Megan Quandt, who is now 3-0 (2-0 NSIC) at No. 1 singles and also 3-0 (2-0 NSIC) in No. 1 doubles with Talia Janos. Quandt, who was a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles this weekend, registered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Arisa Kashima of SCSU. Then, teaming with Janos, won 6-2 over Hashima and Maria Paz Aoki at No. 1 doubles.  Janos also recorded a straight set win in singles with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Paz Aoki. Janos improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play at No. 2 singles.

USF also had wins in singles at No. 3 and No. 6. Danielle Thorfinnson registered a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Johana Brower of SCSU to move to 3-0 (2-0 NSIC) on the season. Katelyn Nesheim picked up a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Samantha Fitzpatrick at No. 6 singles.

Nesheim is now 3-0 at No. 6 singles and also stands 3-0 at No. 3 doubles. Today, she again teamed with Emily Thinnsen for  a 6-4 win over Olivia Fredrickson and Shanna Kinny of SCSU.

At No. 4 singles, Joelle Thorfinnson dropped a tiebreaker to fall to 1-2 overall (1-1 NSIC) on the season. Shanna Kinny of SCSU picked up a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win. At No. 5 singles, Thinnsen fell to 2-1 (1-1 NSIC) after a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Claudia Munoz-Perez.
