ORLANDO, FLA – Led by
Annika Randt's first career win in singles, the University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (5-3) earned a 5-3 win over Marywood (Pa.) on Monday (March 7). The match was shortened due to rainy conditions but play was not called until after USF had clinched the match with three singles and two doubles wins.
"We played really smart tennis today," said USF Head Coach
Kevin Grebin, whose team will face Saginaw Valley State at 7 am and Shippensburg at noon on Tuesday (March 8) in Orlando, Fla., as spring break play continues for USF. "I was really pleased and proud of how everyone competed today. It was too bad that match ended due to the weather," he said.
A freshman from Glenwood, Minn., Randt earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kayla Flyte of Marywood at No. 6 singles in her first singles match at USF. In other singles play, USF had a 6-0, 6-1 win from sophomore
Talia Janos at No. 1 singles over Allison Bashore of Marywood. With the victory, Janos is now 3-5 in singles competition. USF freshman
Katelyn Nesheim is now 7-1 after a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lyndsey Medric of Marywood.
Also in singles, senior
Joelle Thorfinnson led Gabrielle Nowak, 6-3, 3-3; freshman
Emily Thinnsen was up on Faith Kendricks, 6-2 and freshman
Brianna Holm was ahead of Karah Laboranti, 6-2, 1-1, when play was halted and match called due to rainy conditions.
In doubles, USF's No. 1 team of
Megan Quandt and
Danielle Thorfinnson earned an 8-1 victory over Bashore/Nowak of Marywood in their first doubles match together. At No. 2, USF's
Emily Applegate and
Peyton Forney took an 8-1 decision over Medric/Laboranti which was also their first time in doubles this year. Marywood's Elsa Kovatch and Faith Kendricks defeated USF's
Ella Schmidt and
Rhianna Cantine, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles match.
