SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls Tennis Team (10-9, 5-6 NSIC) dropped a 7-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference decision to No. 20 Augustana (18-1, 11-0 NSIC) on Monday afternoon at the Huether Tennis Centre as the regular season drew to a close.
Both USF, which will be seeded No. 7 and Augustana, the No. 1 seed, have advanced to the NSIC Postseason Tennis Tourney on April 22-24 at the Huether Family Match Pointe. The Cougars will face No. 2 seed Winona State. USF concluded the regular season at 10-9 and 5-6 in the NSIC. It is the third time in the DII era that USF has posted double-digit wins in a season.
Against Augustana, the Cougars played hard and had a strong effort, said USF Head Coach
Kevin Grebin. "Even though we were a bit shorthanded, everyone stepped up and played hard and I think really well," he said. "The effort has been extraordinary all season for this group. I am really proud of how tough, resilient and focused we have been all year," he said.
Against the nationally-ranked Vikings, USF dropped all three doubles matches and the six in singles play.
At No. 1 doubles, Danielle and
Joelle Thorfinnson lost to Flore Hadjigeorgiou and Alexsandr Kistanova, 6-0. At No. 2,
Peyton Forney and
Emily Applegate dropped a 6-0 decision to Emily Granson and Valeriya Monko. At No. 3, the freshman tandem of
Emily Thinnsen and
Katelyn Nesheim lost, 6-1, to Gabriela Jancikova and Laura Arce Vieyra.
In singles, Monko defeated D. Thorfinnson, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1. Hadjigeorgiou took a 6-1, 6-1 decision over J. Thorfinnson at No. 2.
Peyton Forney was at No. for USF and she lost to Arce Vieyra, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4, Applegate dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Jancikova. At No. 5, Thinnsen lost, 6-0, 6-0 to Kistanova while Nesheim dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Margarita Chouliara at No. 6 singles.
