USF Swimming Defeats SMSU 144-87

MARSHALL, MINN. – USF Swimming advanced to 3-0 following a 144-87 victory over SMSU today.

"A lot of our swimmers had the chance to swim in some new events today and they all were able to step up and rise to the occasion," stated assistant coach Anna Moore.

The Coo started the day off with a 200 medley relay victory from Domenica Solano Ocampo, Abby Ford, Valerie Childs and Ursula Demarquet-Alban. The relay team recorded a time of 1:49.67

Freshman Alessia Moro and sophomore Valentina Brunelli took the top-2 spots in the 1,000 freestyle. Moro recorded a time of 10:34.94 while Brunelli clocked in 15 10:55.22.

Solano Ocampo defeated Ellie Wilber of SMSU by .25 seconds to claim first place in the 200 freestyle with a personal best time of 2:00.37.

Freshman Phini Schumacher also defeated SMSUs Maija Geier by .01 seconds in the 50 freestyle clocking in at 24.69.

Last seasons national place winner, Inte Pas, finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:13.28 followed by Emily Groom at 2:15.79.

Emily Aten and Hannah Warmbrand notched the top-2 spots in the 100 butterfly. Aten recorded a time of 1:00.54 with Warmbrand close behind at 1:00.67.

Demarquet-Alban also secured a first place finish with a time of 53.49 in the 100 freestyle.

In the 100 backstroke, Moro took second place with a time of 1:03.41 followed by Sarah Knox and Sydnee Whetten.

Weronika Mrozek shaved 11 seconds off her season best in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.28 followed by Phini Schumacher at 5:22.45.

Pas clocked in at 1:06.83 to take win the 100 breaststroke.

The Cougars occupied first, second and third place in the 200 freestyle relay with Weronika Mrozek, Emily Small, Valentina Brunelli and Phini Schumacher landing a time of 1:43.53 to win the final event of the afternoon.

Sioux Falls will be back in action Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21 as they host Augustana, MSU Moorhead and Northern State at the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls.
