SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Cougars women's tennis team wrapped up their regular season with a series split against St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth this weekend. Sioux Falls finishes the regular season 12-5 overall with a conference record of 5-3, the best season outing for the Cougars in the DII era.
MATCH ONE – ST. CLOUD STATE – L, 4-3
The Cougars took on the Huskies Friday night when they dropped a tough 4-3 match. USF fell to SCSU for the first time since 2017, but still hold a 7-6 series lead over the Huskies.
Sioux Falls went 2-1 in the doubles portion of last night's match with Talia Janos and Danielle Thorfinnson taking the No. 1 doubles 6-3 and Sydney Osburn and Ella Hancock taking the No. 2 doubles 6-3 as well.
Janos and Thorfinnson went on to win the No.1 and 2 single matches before St. Cloud State picked up the final four matches. Three of the four final matches were taken to three sets, but ultimately fell in favor of the Huskies.
MATCH TWO – MINNESOTA DULUTH – W, 7-0
Sioux Falls swept Minnesota Duluth, 7-0, tonight for their final regular season match of the season. Following today's win, the Cougars move to a series record of 7-4 against the Bulldogs.
The Cougars swept the doubles portion of tonight's match with Janos and D. Thorfinnson securing a 6-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles slot. Osburn and Hancock also won their match 6-2 with Katelyn Nesheim and Emma Rangel following suit with a 6-1 doubles victory as well.
Sioux Falls swept 4-of-6 single matches while winning 2-of-6 in three sets. Janos and D. Thorfinnson were the only two that took their opponents to three sets, but ultimately came away with the win.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to Match Pointe next weekend to take part in the NSIC Tennis Championships. The Championships will run from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23 here in Sioux Falls.
