Tommy Downs Women's Flag Football Staff Announcement

Sioux Falls Names Tommy Downs as Director of Flag Football Development & Recruiting

10/28/2026 5:18:00 PM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls Athletics Department has announced that current Head Softball Coach Tommy Downs will take on an additional role as Director of Flag Football Development & Recruiting for the Cougars' inaugural program, which is set to begin competition during the 2027-28 academic year.

In this additional capacity, Downs will help lay the foundation for the newest sport addition to USF Athletics by leading early recruiting efforts, establishing relationships with prospective student-athletes and coaches, and assisting in the early development stages of the program. Downs will continue serving as the head coach of USF Softball, which will remain his primary responsibility.

"Coach Downs brings trusted experience and immediate credibility to our inaugural women's flag football program," said USF Director of Athletics Jon Hart. "His proven ability to build successful programs and recruit in key territories will be instrumental as we prepare for the 2027-28 season and continue our search for our first head coach. I'm grateful for his enthusiasm and leadership as we take another important step forward in this initiative."

As Director of Flag Football Development & Recruiting, Downs will play an instrumental role in establishing the program's recruiting foundation. His responsibilities will include identifying and evaluating prospective student-athletes, coordinating campus visits, and working alongside Athletics administration and the University's Admissions staff to support immediate planning and operations of the program. Downs' involvement will provide continuity and leadership while USF continues its search for a permanent women's flag football head coach.

The addition of women's flag football marks another significant step in the continued growth of Cougar Athletics. With the sport's rapidly expanding opportunities at the high school, collegiate, professional, and international levels, USF is positioning itself to provide more competitive pathways for female student-athletes throughout the region and beyond.

The Cougars are scheduled to begin competition in spring 2028 as part of the 2027-28 academic year.
