Biography

Talented offensive lineman that played four years at East Carolina...graduated from ECU and joining the Cougars to use his final year of eligibility to play alongside brother and sophomore defensive lineman Evan Gentry...expected to be an immediate anchor on USF's offensive line.

2013 (JUNIOR): Appeared in all 13 games for ECU…the Pirates capped a 10-3 season with a 37-20 victory over Ohio in the Beef ’O’ Brady’s Bowl…saw regular action in the offensive line rotation throughout the season…provided front line support for a high-powered Pirate offense that averaged 40.2 points and 468.2 yards per contest…also helped ECU maintain an 85% red zone efficiency, including 51-for-75 (68%) on touchdown attempts…held down a primary protection role on the Pirates’ field goal and PAT squads for the third straight season…contributed to a combined 64-for-66 PAT effort and second consecutive block-free season for all ECU specialists…graduated from ECU with a degree in history.

2012 (SOPHOMORE): Played in 12 of 13 games as a reserve guard on the offensive unit and as a special teams member…played top protection role on ECU's field goal and PAT squads for a second-straight campaign…contributed to a perfect 50-of-50 extra-point performance by kicker Warren Harvey and a block-free overall campaign for all Pirate specialists.

2011 (REDSHIRT FRESHMAN): Appeared in the final seven games of the year and made one start, at right tackle against UTEP, during initial campaign on East Carolina's active roster…earned a place on the Pirates' kicking nits before being bumped up to starting role due to injuries along the line…got off to a slow start initially after suffering a left knee injury during the early stages of preseason camp (Aug. 11) …part of an offensive line unit that helped ECU to a No. 20 national ranking in passing offense (286.1 yards per game) as well as standing second in Conference USA in passing offense and fifth in total offense (395.2 yards per game)…provided protection for Pirate quarterbacks to throw for more than 300 yards in six of the last 10 games…aerial attack ended the season with the second-most passing yards in program history (3,433)…opened holes for 12 rushing touchdowns in the last seven games…Pirates averaged 11.4 yards per completion against Southern Miss.


2010 (FRESHMAN): Spent initial season on the scout teams while redshirting…officially signed with East Carolina in February.


HIGH SCHOOL: A three-year varsity letterwinner at Maclay School in Tallahassee before transferring to North Florida Christian for the 2009 season…coach at NFC was Tim Cokely…an All-Big Bend First Team selection by The Tallahassee Democrat as a senior…named to the 2009 SunStateFootball.com's Preseason All-Area Team…rated by ESPN.com as the 41st-best offensive tackle in the country…team captain as a sophomore and junior at Maclay…earned honorable mention all-district and all-region honors as a sophomore before earning first team all-conference recognition after junior year at Maclay…competed on the track team at MHS, placing 15th in the shot put at the Tallahassee City Championships as a sophomore…also played basketball at Maclay and North Florida Christian, helping the former to a pair of district championships…in all, earned 10 prep varsity letters (football/3, basketball/3, track/4).


PERSONAL: Full name is Stephen Andrew Gentry…prefers to go by nickname of Drew…born July 6, 1991 in Evansville (Ind.)...graduated from ECU with a degree in history…son of Michael Gentry…lost his mother at the age of 14 (eighth grade), which he understandably lists as the biggest obstacle he's had to overcome...brother Evan is a sophomore defensive lineman at USF…says fishing and playing basketball are his hobbies of choice…lists Donovan McNabb as one of the top celebrities he's met.
