Biography

Career
A skilled veteran guard with prior NSIC experience, Alex Mattes has appeared in 74 collegiate games with 35 starts across three seasons between UMary and Sioux Falls, totaling 1,562 career minutes. He has scored 479 career points while averaging 6.5 points per game, adding 103 rebounds, 65 assists, 46 steals, and eight blocks. Known for his versatility and steady presence, Mattes brought valuable leadership and conference experience to the Cougar backcourt.

2025-26 (Junior)
In his first season with the Cougars, Mattes appeared in 16 games with one start, providing reliable depth and veteran leadership in the backcourt. He averaged 5.8 points per game while shooting an efficient 49.2 percent from the field and 78.1 percent from the free-throw line. Mattes added 19 rebounds, nine assists, four steals, and one block while averaging 14.2 minutes per contest.

He delivered several key offensive performances throughout the season, including a season-high 16 points against St. Cloud State on 4-of-6 shooting while adding six made free throws. Mattes also scored 11 points twice, first at Winona State and again at Bemidji State, where he knocked down three three-pointers. His efficiency and experience gave the Cougars a dependable scoring option off the bench throughout the season.

Previous School (UMary)
Prior to joining Sioux Falls, Mattes spent two seasons at UMary, where he appeared in 58 games with 34 starts and served as a team captain. During his time with the Marauders, he averaged 6.7 points, 1.0 assists, and 1.4 rebounds per game while gaining extensive NSIC experience.

High School
Mattes competed in both basketball and football during his prep career while establishing himself as one of the top players in his conference. He was a four-time All-Academic Team selection and earned three All-Conference honors while helping lead his program to three conference championships. He was also named Conference MVP and surpassed 1,000 career points, averaging 17.0 points per game as a senior.

Mattes is the son of Jaimie and Tricia Mattes and has one sibling, Addison.
