Jon Maccoll, who assisted in the start-up of swimming at national champion Queens University five years ago, has been named to lead the new women's swimming program at the University of Sioux Falls, according to an announcement today (Monday, August 31) by USF Director of Athletics Josh Snyder.
"It is exciting to add a coach of Jon’s ability and caliber to the staff at USF,” said Snyder. "He had a key role in developing the Queen’s University swimming programs and has shown a prowess in recruiting at both the DI and DII levels. We are pleased that he will be coming to lead our program.”
Earlier this year, USF was among three NSIC schools to add women’s swimming for the 2016-17 year. The addition of swimming expands USF’s intercollegiate athletics offerings to 17 teams, including 10 for women and seven for men. The Cougars will compete with six other league members sponsoring women's swimming.
Maccoll, who has spent the past two years as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, was assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator for Queens University of Charlotte from 2010-13. Working with head coach Jeff Dugdale, Maccoll helped mold a program that competed almost immediately at the national level. In 2015, Queens University, led by Dugdale, captured the school’s first-ever national championship in any sport by winning both the NCAA DII titles in both men and women’s swimming and diving.
“I am honored to be chosen to lead the USF swimming program,” said Maccoll who begins his duties at USF this week. “The school’s academic prestige, the city of Sioux Falls growth, and AD Snyder’s vision for USF athletics are all linked together in a partnership pact for success. I am excited to play my part in that success, while creating an environment where future student-athletes can achieve their goals in the classroom, in the pool, and someday the board room,” he said.
While on the staff at Queens, Maccoll brought in a pair of recruiting classes that included a total of four top-10 nationally ranked recruits. He was a member of the SwimMAC Carolina Team Elite coaching staff as well during his two years in Charlotte as assistant coach. While there, he helped start up a new program for summer training of collegiate swimmers.
Maccoll attended both Ashland University and Slippery Rock University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Slippery Rock in 2007.
