USF's Bob Young Elected to NAIA Hall of Fame

Former University of Sioux Falls head football coach Bob Young is one of 15 members of the 2009-2010 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame class.

Young guided the Cougar football team 22 seasons from 1983-2004, accumulating a 172-69-3 career record including 17 winning seasons and a perfect 14-0 record in 1996 that resulted in the program's first national championship. Young guided the Cougars to five other undefeated regular season campaigns and made numerous appearances in the NAIA Football Championship Series. Prior to Young's arrival, the USF football program only celebrated seven winning seasons in 65 years of existence.

Young is also a member of the USF and South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, the USF Sanford Sports Complex football field is named Bob Young Field in honor of Young's accomplishments as a Cougar. Young mentored hundreds of young men through their college careers, including current USF head football coach Kalen DeBoer, assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell and quarterbacks coach Kurtiss Riggs.

A native of Beresford, S.D., Young played linebacker and offensive guard for the Cougar's from 1957 to 1961. Young then moved to Arizona where he earned his masters at Arizona State University in 1965. Young coached at Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Ariz., compiling a 72-35-5 overall record.

Young will be inducted at the AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday, January 10, 2010.
