USF Women's Basketball Holds Off Regis Comeback

The University of Sioux Falls women's basketball team held off a late push by Regis University Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo. to pick-up a 66-55 win. USF, 5-1, has won three straight.

USF opened their scoring with 3 straight 3-pointers one by Holli Aggen and two by Vanessa Johnson to take an early 9-7 lead at the 17 minute mark.

Two more 3-pointers from Johnson and Aggen with nine minutes left in the half stretched the Cougars lead to eight.

A layup by Kara Larson near the seven minute mark pulled the Rangers within four, but USF maintained a five point lead at the break, as the scoreboard read 29-24, USF.

Through 20 minutes of play, Regis owned the paint where they outscored USF 12-4, but the Cougars countered with sharp shooting from beyond the arc where they made 5 3-point field goals, to 1 by Regis.

After shooting just 28.6% in the first half, the Cougars warmed up to shoot 54.5% from the field and outscore the Rangers 37-31 in the second half.

USF began the second half on an impressive 17-3 run that featured scoring from all five members of the lineup to take their largest lead at 46-26 with 12:15 to play.

The Rangers capitalized on turnovers by the Cougars, who turned the ball over nine times in the half which Regis turned into 15 points to cut their deficit to 12 with 3:50 left in the game.

Regis continued to chip away at what was once a 20 point lead. They came as close as six following a pair of free-throws by Larson, but it was to little to late. Her free-throws made it 61-55 with just under a minute to go.

From there Regis was forced to foul.

USF made their free-throws down the stretch and held off a late comeback at Regis to record their second win in two days.

Senior guard Vanessa Johnson had a big first half, where she went 3-6 from downtown to post 13 points. She finished 6-10 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 19 points and five assist.

Laura Johnson added nine points and a team high six rebounds.

The Cougars will have a week off before they travel to Valley City, N.D. Saturday (Dec. 3) to take on Valley City State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2p.m.
