Cougars Show Fight in Exhibition at Utah to Open 2025–26 Season

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball team tipped off its 2025–26 campaign with a strong exhibition effort against Division I Utah, falling 88–62 on Monday afternoon inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Facing one of the Big 12's top programs, the Cougars showcased balanced scoring, solid defensive energy, and valuable depth in their first official test of the season.

USF's offense found rhythm late, scoring 25 points in the final quarter to close the gap while gaining confidence and continuity heading into the regular season.

Game Summary

Utah's size and tempo set the tone early as the Utes led 22–11 after one quarter and 42–25 at the break. The Cougars battled throughout, shooting 34.5% from the field (20-of-58) and 33% from deep (6-of-18). USF's bench contributed 20 points, and the defense forced 17 Utah turnovers thanks to nine Cougar steals.

How It Happened

First Quarter:
USF started with energy, led by an early three from Anna Vaaler and mid-range jumper from Kami Wadsworth, but Utah's efficiency inside created separation. The Cougars trailed 22–11 after one, shooting 25% (4-of-16) from the floor.

Second Quarter:
The Cougars settled in offensively, connecting on 45% of their shots in the frame. Landree Wilson knocked down a key three, while Krista Langager and Vaaler added inside baskets to keep USF within reach at halftime, 42–25.

Third Quarter:
Utah extended its advantage with a 21-12 quarter as the Utes' ball movement continued to create open looks from beyond the arc. USF found contributions from Wilson, Vaaler, and Wadsworth while freshman Rease Murtaugh provided a spark defensively.

Fourth Quarter:
The Cougars finished strong, matching Utah 25-25 in the final frame and showing their offensive potential. Alexis Rose drilled a pair of threes, Langager was efficient inside, and USF hit 9-of-10 free throws in the quarter to close out the afternoon on a high note.

Coach's Corner
