USF Plays to 2OT Tie With NSU

The University of Sioux Falls women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Northern State University Sunday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Cougars brought plenty of offense and scored first, but the Wolves responded to force two overtime periods. Brooke Jurgens was responsible for USF's lone goal.

It was USF's first non-losing decision of the year, as they move to 0-13-1 (0-11-1, NSIC), while NSU moved to 3-9-2 (2-7-2, NSIC) this season.

The Cougars put pressure on the Wolves' defense early, tallying 11 shots (four on target) in the opening period. USF's persistence paid off in the 43rd minute when Jurgens weaved through a second line of defense and fired from the top center of the box to put a point on the board for the Cougars. It was her first goal of year.

USF held a 1-0 lead at the break.

NSU didn't waste much time getting back into the game. They scored the equalizer near the 57 minute mark, when Rachel Goslinga slipped past USF defenders to fire a bullet into the right corner of the net.

USF had two golden opportunities to take the game, but luck was not on their side. Katie O'neill's shot in the 60th minute flew just high of the goal, while Maria Gonzalez's shot six minutes later rolled inches wide right of an open net.

The visiting team made a last-minute push, acquiring possession for the majority of the final four minutes, but strong play in net for USF made for a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

USF earned a cornerkick right away in the first overtime, but were unable to produce any points from it. NSU actually outshot USF 3-0 in extra minutes, but none posed a real scoring threat.

Samantha Maybon played an exceptional game in net for the Cougars. She secured several NSU corner kicks down the stretch and made maybe the play of the game in the 73rd minute, when she robbed NSU's Amber Wanous of a potential game-winning goal with a diving save. She was credited with four saves and her first tie of the year.

The Cougars held a 17-13 advantage in shots and 7-5 margin in shots on target.

Mikenna Greathouse led USF with three shots, while Abbey Roelfson, Jurgens, Tionne Web, Micole Jones and Maria Gonzalez added two shots each.
