USF Falls to Wayne State in Home Finale

The University of Sioux Falls dropped a 2-0 decision to Wayne State College (Neb.) in their final home game of the season Friday night. The game also represented senior night for USF seniors Mallory Carda, Danielle Dement, Lindsey Fowler-Wacholz, Emily Johnson, Micole Jones, Brooke Jurgens and Taylor Olson.

The Cougars are now 0-16-1 (0-14-1, NSIC) on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 2-14-1 (2-11-1, NSIC).

USF held WSC in check for most the game, but a couple of costly defensive breakdowns proved to be the difference.

The first mistake came in the 28th minute when McKenna Adams was unaccounted for and broke loose for a 1-vs-1 with the goalkeeper. Placing the ball into left net, she won to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Statistically the Cougars had the better opening period, but WSC went into intermission with a 1-0 advantage.

USF came out firing in the second half, challenging the visiting team's defense with five consecutive shots between the 56th and 65th minute but they just couldn't find the back of the net.

A couple of minutes later WSC responded with another score. Very similar to their first, the Wildcats received a good run, this time by Josie Brown, to beat the defenders for a 1-on-1 with the goalie. Brown's goal made it 2-0.

Mikenna Greathouse nearly got one back for USF in the 70th minute, but luck was not on her side. She ripped a heater towards right net, which hit the post and then rolled horizontally infront of the goal line, not crossing the entire time.

The Cougars didn't give up, and would put a couple more shots on net in the final minutes, but WSC would walk away with the 2-0 win.

USF outshot WSC 13-12, and recorded three more shots on goal than the visiting team.
Greathouse came off the bench to tally a career-high six shots, including one on goal, to lead USF. Jurgen, Abby Roelfson, Kerry Grogan, Katie O'Neill and Tionne each added a shot on target.

The Cougars conclude their season Sunday with a 1p.m. matchup with crosstown rival Augustana at Morstad Field.
