The Sioux Falls women's basketball team (4-3, 1-2 NSIC) lost 92-64 at rival No.
7 Augustana College (7-0, 3-0 NSIC) on Saturday after falling behind by double
digit points just under four minutes into the first half.
The loss is the second in a row for the Cougars, who had not suffered
consecutive defeats since February 2010.
USF provided little offensive punch throughout the entire game outside of
Laura Johnson and Teagan Molden, who scored 15 points and 12 points
respectively.
The rest of the team scored 37 total and the Cougars shot 36.7 percent from
the field for the game after being constantly pushed around by the Viking
defense.
Augustana's size and aggressiveness on the boards bothered the Cougars all
night. The Vikings out-rebounded USF 44-22 and blocked six shots.
The Cougars missed the leadership of senior guard Holli Aggen, who is
recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery.
With the game tied at 23-23 with 7:34 remaining in the first half, the
Vikings blew the game open with a 24-6 run to lead 47-29 at halftime after
holding the Cougars to 11 field goals and 28.6 percent from behind the three
point line.
Out of the break, the Vikings quickly stretched the margin to 30 points and
led by as many as 39 points in the second half. The Cougars battled late in the
game but could not cut the deficit to less than 28 points.
The Cougars only turned the ball over 12 times, while the Vikings committed
19 turnovers. USF dished 11 total assists, marking the fifth time in six games
that the squad has tallied double-digit assists.
The Vikings burned up the nets with a 56.9 percent shooting clip. They were
also dialed in beyond the arc, connecting on 12-of-23 (52.2%) three-point
attempts.
USF finished 22-for-60 from the
floor, 4-for-13 from three-point range and 16-for-24 from the stripe.
Mikenna Greathouse and Jaicee Ulmer each tallied seven points, while Greathouse also posted a team-best four rebounds. Kelli Hoff and Marie Malloy scored five points apiece. Malloy went 2-for-2 from the floor in six minutes of action.
The loss wrapped up a three-game road
trip for the Cougars, who return home to face Concordia-St.
Paul on Dec. 14.
