Cougars Lose Pitching Duel to MSSU Lions, 1-0

The Cougars (2-6) dropped a 1-0 decision to the Missouri Southern Lions (7-0) on Sunday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium. The home-standing Lions scored a run in the first inning that proved to be the game winner.

Missouri Southern manufactured the only run of the game in the bottom of the first, when Luke Acosta drew a leadoff walk, stole second and was brought home on an RBI single by Tee Helsel. The run was scored as earned against the Cougars' Noah Coleman (0-1), who threw six innings in the loss.

USF's best offensive chance came in the fifth inning as the Cougars had men on second and third with two out but were unable to score following an inning-ending ground out to third base.
Anthony Williams, Damian Kardas and Jeremy Varner each recorded a hit for the Cougars.

Coleman threw six innings for the Cougars and allowed just one run on four hits while recording six strikeouts. Coleman was able to work out of a fifth inning jam and stranded a total of six Missouri State runners on base.

Jesse Kinzey went wire-to-wire for the Lions, recording the shutout after scattering three hits and two walks while striking out two.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow with a twinbill at Pittsburg State. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
