USF Falls to No. 11 Eagles in Spring Break Finale

Baseball USF Athletics

Baseball Loses At CSU-San Marcos, 15-5

The University of Sioux Falls baseball team (3-14) lost its second of a five-game spring break trip at California State University-San Marcos, 15-5, Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Field in San Marcos, Calif.

Seven of nine CSUSM batters (15-11) had hits on the day and six recorded RBIs. The home-standing nine out hit USF, 17-6 (.460-.176) and a sextet of CSUSM pitchers struck out a program-best 17 combined hitters.

CSUSM chose to split innings between the bullpen after the second frame and it proved to be effective; five different relievers combined to strike out 12 Cougar batters over the final seven innings and just 10 outs were allowed by a ball put in play.

CSUSM opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, but USF responded with four runs in the top of the third. Ryan Fobes registered a lead-off hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by Austin Goodenow. Zach Ireland reached first base after an error by CSUSM reliever Scott Myers to put ducks on the pond for Jimmy Maxwell, who scored Fobes with a sacrifice fly to center field. After a strikeout by Dylan Dwyer put two outs on the scoreboard, Noah Coleman hit a bleeder to short center to score Goodenow. Coleman stole second and both he and Ireland touched home on a double by Damian Kardas to put USF on top 4-2.

CSUSM got one run back in its half of the third, tied the game in the fourth and regained the lead after a five-run fifth that chased Cougar starter Eric Brothers. USF cut the deficit to 9-5 in the top of the sixth but that's as close as it would get.

The CSUSM relievers kept the visitors off the scoreboard the rest of the way, scattering two hits over the final two innings. CSUSM tacked on six more unanswered runs in the seventh to create the final margin.

Freshman Eric Brothers (1-2) took the loss for USF, allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four base on balls. Kardas led the Sioux Falls offense with a pair of two-sackers, two RBI and a walk. Coleman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Maxwell had an RBI and Austin Goodenow posted a single.

The Cougars will face Concordia-Irvine, the 2011 NAIA champions, tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. PST.
