Ulmer, Molden fuel 75-61 win over Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - Behind Jaicee Ulmer and Teagan Molden's three-point shooting, University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball defeated Upper Iowa, 75-61, on the road Saturday evening. The Cougars snap a two-game losing skid to improve to 11-3 overall with a 7-3 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

USF earns the season sweep over Upper Iowa (4-10, 2-8) after taking the Peacocks down by 30 points, 86-56, on Dec. 5.

The Sioux Falls offense came out firing on all cylinders, shooting 56.3 percent in the first half and connecting on six of their 11 three-point attempts. Led by Ulmer's 10 first-half points, the Cougars built a 45-26 lead entering intermission.

After a 2-2 tie, USF ripped off a 20-5 run in just more than five minutes. Jaicee Ulmer hit two threes and the Cougars connected on four layups, easily building a double-digit lead before the second media timeout.

The Peacocks trimmed the USF lead to 13 at 10:18 in the first half, but Molden drilled a 3-pointer and sparked another Cougar run. Haydn Becker connected on her second three-point shot of the half to give USF a 21-point advantage at 40-19 with five minutes and change to play.

Molden became the third Cougar to make a pair of threes in the opening stanza when her triple pushed the lead back to 20 points with two minutes remaining. After a UIU 3-pointer, USF would take their 19-point lead, 45-26, into halftime after holding the Peacocks to 36.7 percent shooting. The Cougars weren't short on offensive contributors in the first half as eight different players scored in the opening period.

Upper Iowa cranked up their offense early in the second half, but USF answered every surge by the Peacocks en route to their 14-point victory. Ulmer and Molden would connect on two more 3-pointers each in the second half and the Cougars tied their previous season-best with 11 threes made in a game.

Molden's third triple of the night gave Sioux Falls a 24-point advantage at 61-37 five minutes into the second half. The USF lead hovered in the high teens for the majority of the game as the Cougars' balanced attack was able to respond to Upper Iowa's Lauren Buck, who poured in a game-high 22 points.

For her fourth 3-pointer of the game, Ulmer pushed the Cougar lead back into the 20s with seven minutes remaining and Marie Malloy put the nail in the coffin with an old-fashioned three-point play two minutes later. Malloy, who finished with 11 points, hit a layup and the ensuing free throw after a foul and gave Sioux Falls a 72-49 lead with 5:58 left.

Olivia Winkler and Olivia Meier tried to lead a late UIU charge, but the USF advantage was too much. The Peacocks scored 10 straight points after Malloy's three-point play with Winkler and Meier each dropping four, and the Sioux Falls lead was trimmed to 13 points with just less than two minutes to play. Molden took the wind out of UIU's sails when she hit her fourth three of the game at 0:42 and Buck's final layup brought the final score to 75-61.

All eight players who scored for the Cougars reached at least four points and despite Ulmer starting for the first time this season, USF's bench outscored Upper Iowa's reserves 18-2. The Cougars dominated the paint, not with their bigs, but with guards probing for easy layups, and held a 34-26 lead in points in the paint.

Looking to build this victory into a winning streak, Sioux Falls returns home to host MSU Moorhead and Northern State on Jan. 16 and 17, respectively, at the Stewart Center.
