SIOUX FALLS - After conceding two first half goals, University of Sioux Falls Soccer mounted a comeback in the second half but fell short in a 2-1 loss to Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars fall to 2-8-2 on the season with a 2-5-1 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition.
Playing with the wind at their backs in the first half, the Peacocks controlled the tempo and held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the first half. USF goalkeeper stopped UIU's first shot before Maggie Olson scored in the 14th minute from a shot 20 yards out.
Lola Weiss recorded USF's only shot on goal in the first half, but it was stopped by the UIU keeper
Upper Iowa pushed their lead to two goals in the 28th minute when Birgit Rjinders scored from six yards out to put the Peacocks up 2-0. Perkins stopped three more shots in the first half to keep the Cougars down 2-0 entering halftime.
Changing sides of the field, USF controlled the game in their offensive half of the field and held an 11-2 edge in total shots.
Lauren LaFavre had a pair of shots miss right in the opening minutes of the second half and
Alexandria Scott's free kick missed just left of the net.
In the 70th minute, the Cougars cut into the Upper Iowa lead with their first goal.
Lola Weiss took a throw-in from LaFavre and her shot was mishandled by the Upper Iowa keeper and crossed the goal line for Weiss's second goal of the season.
Scott had another scoring chance in the 71st minute but it hit the crossbar on a shot from 25 yards out. AlexaD'Acunto had a shot blocked inside the 18-yard box and
Elisa Glab's header sailed high off a corner kick.
Weiss had another shot blocked in the 77th minute and LaFavre had two more attempts in the following minutes, but bother were stopped by UIU defenders.
Perkins finished with four saves on the day and LaFavre led the team with four shots with Weiss taking three total and putting two on frame.
The Cougars continue a three-game home stand with St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 15 and 16.
