SIOUX FALLS -- The University of Sioux Falls Volleyball Team, which has won seven of its last eight matches, recorded its second straight sweep with a 3-0 decision over University of Mary (25-17, 25-12, and 25-22) in the regular season finale Saturday night at the Stewart Center.
The USF squad learned Saturday that it was seeded #7 and will face #2 SMSU this Wednesday in the NSIC Tournament First Round. It is the third time in four seasons that the Cougars squad has earned a berth in the NSIC Tournament.
For the second straight match, USF dominated which has become a trend with USF winning nine of its last 10 sets overall and three straight matches.
With the victory, USF captured its 13th conference win of a season, which is a program-best for league wins since joining the NSIC in 2012. Overall, USF pushed their record to a program DII-best 19-9 on the season with their 13-7 mark (7th, NSIC)Â in the NSIC. USF also has recorded a program-best 19 DII wins.
Leading the way in the win against U-Mary (9-20, 4-16 NSIC) was sophomore
Lexi Scott, who hit .778 with a match-high 14 kills. Scott converted the 14 kills on just 18 total attacks and also had eight block assists. Senior
Jordan Calef added nine kills on 13 attacks for a .692 hitting percentage with five block assists. Setter
Sydney Schaap had 35 assists, three digs and four block assists while senior
Abby Folk led in digs with 14. Â Overall, USF hit .374 for the match with 45 kills on 99 attacks. Meanwhile U-Mary hit just .103 with 31 kills on 97 attacks.
Key to the victory for USF was its success in blocking. Led by all-league selection Scott, the Cougars had 14.5 blocks to just six for U-Mary. The Cougars also had 39 assists and 40 digs.
In the opening set, USF broke from a 9-8 lead with an 8-4 run for a 17-12 lead after a kill by
Aubrey Milne. Later in the set, Mary had three straight service errors to fall behind 23-15 and Calef's kill wrapped up the set for the Cougars. In the opening set, USF converted 13 kills on 34 attacks for a .324 hitting percentage.
In the second set, the Cougars improved on their success at the net. They knocked down 14 kills on 24 attacks for a .542 hitting percentage. USF jumped to a 14-8 lead after a kill by Scott, which helped fuel a six-point run for USF and a 19-8 lead. U-Mary couldn't cut into the lead and a kill by
Bria Barfnecht clinched the win as USF built a 2-0 set lead.
The third set was a much tighter contest, which USF eventually prevailing, 25-22. USF again had a solid hitting percentage, connecting on 18 kills on 41 attempts for a .317 mark. The set was back and forth in the early doing with a kill by USF's
Makenna Rockeman, who had six in the match, providing an 11-8 advantage for the Cougars. Later, Calef had a kill for a 15-12 lead. When Schaap had a kill, the Cougars led, 20-15, and fought off a late charge by the Marauders to take the victory.
