Four Cougars set career highs in five-set loss at MSU Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – University of Sioux Falls Volleyball had their four-match winning streak snapped, falling in five sets at MSU Moorhead, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-7), on Friday night. The Cougars fall to 16-9 on the season, with a 10-7 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Bria Barfnecht and Lexi Scott both hit career highs for the Cougars with Barfnecht setting a career-best at 18 kills and Scott tying her 19-kill output from a week ago. USF hit 66 kills to MSU Moorhead's 50, but the Cougars committed 38 attack errors and finished with a .156 attack percentage in part from 14 MSUM blocks.

Sioux Falls had 19 kills in the first set, but committed 11 errors, allowing the Dragons to win the opening set, 25-21. Makenna Rockeman connected on six of her 14 kills in the first frame and Scott had five, but the Cougars fell behind 1-0 in the match.

The Cougars raced out to a big lead in the second set and held on to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory. Barfnecht had five of her career-high 18 kills in the second frame, hitting four early to help USF build a 13-5 lead. MSUM strung together a few runs, but the Cougar lead was too much and Barfnecht connected on the final kill for the victory.

The third set was back-and-forth with each team making quick runs to seize control. The Cougars pushed ahead with Scott and Rockeman providing a big block for an 11-8 lead. MSUM answered and the teams traded points until USF took an 18-17 lead on a Scott kill. However, the Cougars would only score two more points in the third set, suffering a 25-20 loss.

Neither team budged to open the third set as USF looked to force a fifth set and MSU Moorhead wanted to close it in four, but the Cougars pulled away behind Kelli Holloway's two aces for a 25-20 victory. Despite three early kills from Barfnecht, MSU Moorhead pulled ahead 12-11 on a Carly Masloski kill. The Cougars then won the next five points, two of which came on Holloway's aces. With a four-point advantage, Sioux Falls rode weathered two MSUM runs and Barfnecht added two more kills before Scott and Rockeman provided the winning terminations.

After fighting to force a fifth set, the Cougars couldn't complete the comeback, falling 15-7 in the deciding fifth frame. USF managed just five kills in the final set while committing six errors.

Sydney Schaap posted her second career double-double with career highs in assists (59) and digs (15). Abby Folk led the Cougars with 21 digs and Kelli Holloway added 13 digs, tying her career high, to her two service aces.

The Cougars finish their final regular-season road trip tomorrow, Nov. 5 at Northern State, when they take on the Wolves at 6 p.m.
