MANKATO, Minn. - Breaking the school record in his first decathlon, University of Sioux Falls Track & Field freshman
Teddy Frid rose three spots in the standings to take fourth at the NSIC Multi-Event Championships. Frid entered day two of the conference decathlon in seventh place and finished with 6095 points to capture the USF record and score five points for the Sioux Falls men's team as the first postseason competition concluded on Monday evening. The remainder of the NSIC Championships will resume at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. on May 13-14.
Frid's point total surpasses Robert Menzie's mark of 5,623 points set in 2012 and was just eight points shy of third place, 26 short of second, at the conference decathlon. The South St. Paul, Minn. native totaled 3310 points on Sunday, in the thick of the standings at seventh place.
Opening the second day of competition with the 110-meter hurdles, an event in which he ranks fourth all-time at USF and holds the fifth-fastest time in the NSIC this season, Frid quickly made up ground and moved into fifth overall with a 15.17-second time, fastest in the 17-athlete competition. After adding 829 points in the hurdles, Frid tossed the discus 30.09 meters (98 feet-09 inches) to score 466 points and remain in fifth place.
In just his time competing in the pole vault, Frid set a personal-best with the seventh-highest clearance in the competition at 3.45 meters (11-3.75), clearing 11 bars to reach his PR and add 469 points. Moving on to the javelin, Frid recorded a 33.78-meter (110-10) mark to add 353 points and hold onto fifth. With the second-fastest time in the final event, the 1,500-meter run, Frid jumped into fourth place with 668 points from his 4:41.89 time.
Competing in the women's heptathlon, Justin Zylstra entered day two in 12th place, but withdrew after the long jump.
The USF Track & Field team resumes regular-season competition at the Howard Wood Relays on May 6-7 in Sioux Falls before returning to Howard Wood Field for the NSIC Championships on May 13-14.
