Rockeman hits 1,000th career kill but USF falls at St. Cloud State in five sets

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Junior outside hitter Makenna Rockeman connected on her 1,000th career kill, but University of Sioux Falls Volleyball suffered a five-set loss to St. Cloud State, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12). The Cougars fall to 13-9 on the season with an 8-9 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, tying them with St. Cloud State for ninth place in the league standings.

Despite a slow offensive night, Rockeman became the second USF Volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills in the program's NCAA Division II era. The Broomfield, Colo. native finished with seven kills on the night and sits at 1,002 in her career, which ranks second in USF's D2 history.

Freshman outside hitter Averey Yaksich and junior middle blocker Abby Feyereisen had two of the most productive and efficient nights of their careers. Yaksich posted her second straight double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, which tied her career high in the latter. Feyereisen finished with a career-high 11 kills and narrowly missed a career-best with a .364 attack percentage.

Continuing the defensive renaissance that is her junior season, right side hitter Bria Barfnecht picked up 20 digs to lead USF and eclipse the 20-dig mark for the second time in her career. Helping the Cougars to an 86-71 edge over the Huskies in digs, four different Cougars picked up 14 or more. Janelle Lam moved closer to 1,000 career digs with 16 on Friday night while Yaksich and Krista Goerger each recorded 14 digs to help themselves for double-doubles.

Goerger set a host of personal bests in the five-set match. She dished out 47 assists and picked up 14 digs, the first double-double of her career. She added five kills and four service aces, both also career-high marks.

The match was back-and-forth in large chunks, but it was St. Cloud State who made the last push. SCSU rode 16 kills in the first set to a 25-22 victory and USF responded with 16 terminations of their own while holding the Huskies to seven in a 25-22 second-set win, which evened the match.

Sioux Falls suffered their slowest offensive set in the third set, leading to St. Cloud State's 25-18 victory for a 2-1 lead. The Cougars were quick to respond and force a fifth set. USF connected on 16 kills with just four errors to roll past St. Cloud State, 25-15, in the fourth set.

Both teams posted their top attack percentage of the night in the fifth set. SCSU raced out to an 8-3 lead, but USF battled back to cut their deficit to 13-11. However, the comeback halted there when St. Cloud State posted a back-breaking block and the final kill for the 15-12, match-clinching win.

Sioux Falls finishes their regular season road schedule on Saturday, Nov. 4 at No. 9 Minnesota Duluth at 4 p.m.
