KEARNEY, Neb. – Led by a career-best six hits from junior third baseman
Brent Jarvis, the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (2-5) outslugged Nebraska-Kearney (7-12) for an 11-7 nonconference road win on Monday afternoon at Historic Memorial Field. The victory for USF was the second in three games as the Cougars improved to 2-5.
Jarvis, a junior from San Diego, Calif., collected a career-best six hits in six trips to the place with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore first baseman
Josh Rehwaldt also had a big day for the Cougars, producing four RBIs and three hits.
Rob Johnson also had two hits along with an RBI and reached base five times with three walks. Senior outfielder
Noah Durkin had a hit and three runs scored while
Gunner Peterson added two hits for USF.
Four pitchers saw action for USF, including
Dan Johnson, who picked up the win as he moved to 1-2 on the season. He worked two innings, allowing three hits and no runs with a strikeout. Junior
Stuart Maes started on the mound as he allowed three runs and one earned run in three innings of work. He had three strikeouts in facing 14 hitters. Freshman
Keenahn Coyle tossed two innings, allowing four hits and one run with a strikeout. Senior
Zachary Miller finished for USF, picking up his first career save. He allowed three hits and two runs with a strikeout. Alec Cowger (0-1) took the loss for UNK, which used 10 pitchers on the day.
USF jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first and build a 4-1 advantage after three innings. The Cougars continued to put runs on the board all day by adding one in the fifth and seventh innings before putting up a two-spot in the eighth for an 8-5 lead. After UNK cut the lead to 8-7, USF added three more in the ninth inning. The Cougars totaled 11 runs on a season-best 16 hits.
USF opened quickly as Jarvis doubled with one out and scored on a run-scoring single by Rehwaldt in the first inning.
In the third inning, USF took a 4-1 lead with three runs on three hits. After
Cole Sweeney singled to open the third, a walk to Durkin was followed by Jarvis's run-scoring single. With one out,
Rob Johnson's single plated Durkin, who had reached by walk.
Austin Richey's RBI fielder's choice groundout brought home Jarvis.
In the fifth inning,
Connor Merriam's sacrifice fly brought home Johnson, who had singled to open the inning.
In the seventh inning, Johnson walked, advanced to third on single by Richey and scored on passed ball as Cougars pushed lead to 6-4. In the top of the eighth, Rehwaldt smoked a two-run double, which scored Durkin and Jarvis, for an 8-5 lead.
The Cougars offense continued to roll in the 9th inning. After UNK cut the lead to 8-7, the Cougars received a two-run single from Jarvis and a run-scoring single from Rehwaldt for an 11-7 lead.
USF will be back in action on Tuesday as they play a doubleheader with Colorado Mines in Golden, Colo., beginning at 3 p.m.

Rob Johnson improved his batting average to .571 with an .857 slugging percentage and .714 OBP. With his six hits against UNK, Griffing-Jarvis, who has 11 hits in last 15 at bats, pushed his batting average to .542 with 13 hits on 24 at bats. He has a team-high 10 runs scored. He has an. 833 slugging percentage and a .676 OBP. As a team, USF is hitting .313 with a .418 OBP. With his work on the mound,
