BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (7-14, 5-7 NSIC), who had four hits and six RBI from
Brent Jarvis, dropped a doubleheader to Bemidji State (9-15, 6-6 NSIC) on Saturday at Alumni Field.
With the setbacks, USF dropped to 7-14 overall and 5-7 in NSIC play. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. USF led game one, 8-4 before BSU rallied late for an 11-9 walk off win as Scott Litchy had six hits, including two home runs, and seven RBI in the doubleheader.
USF had strong offensive performances from Jarvis, who was 4-of-8 with six RBI, and two runs scored.
Connor Merriam was 3-of-6 with an RBI and run scored. Overall, the Cougars hit just .250 on the day and also struggled on the mound. The Cougars, which had made inroads in recent games on the mound, had an 11.66 ERA, allowing 19 runs on 28 hits in 14 2/3 innings. USF recorded seven strikeouts and walked nine.
G1 – Bemidji State 11 USF 9 (7 innings)
Despite a grand slam and five RBI from Jarvis, USF was unable to hold onto 7-2 and 8-4 leads and BSU won in a walk off on Litchy's two run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mitchell Lyall (0-1) took the loss for USF when he allowed the two-out two-run home run to Lichty.
Zachary Miller started for the Cougars, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing nine hits and five runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
Christian Lazar relieved Miller and gave up two hits and three runs with a walk without retiring a hitter.
Stuart Maes finished the sixth inning, allowing two hits and a run in two/third of an inning.
Jarvis was 2-of-3 with five RBI and a run scored while both
Connor Merriam and
Dylan Gavin collected a pair of hits for USF which had nine runs on nine hits. Gavin was 2-of-4 with three RBI. Litchy led BSU, which had 15 hits in the game, with three hits and four RBI.
Led by Jarvis's first career grand slam, the Cougars used a six-run rally in the fourth inning to build a 7-2 lead. USF opened the scoring in the first inning when
Noah Durkin doubled and scored a single by Jarvis. After BSU rallied for a 2-1 lead, the Cougars responded with their biggest production of the year in the fourth inning.
In that frame,
Matthew Minnick started the big-inning for USF with a one-out single. Minnick promptly stole second and advanced to third after
Trevor Crow reached after being hit by a pitch and Merriam walked. Gavin promptly stroked a two-run single. After
Gunner Peterson singled, which advanced Gavin to third, he stole second base and Durkin walked, setting the stage for Griffing-Jarvis's grand slam.
With two out in the fifth inning, Gavin had an RBI single to right-field to score Crow for an 8-4 lead in the 5th inning. But, BSU rallied for a 9-8 lead with their five-run sixth inning.
Down one and down to its last out, Merriam's RBI single scored Rehwaldt, who had walked and advanced to third on an error by BSU, for the game-tying run. Then, Litchy walked off USF in the bottom of the seventh inning.
G2 – Bemidji State 8 USF 4 (9 innings)
BSU broke from a 3-3 tie, keyed by a two-run home run from Litchy, and defeated USF, 8-4 in game two, for a sweep of the doubleheader. Jack Stigman (2-2) picked up the win for the Beavers, throwing six innings and allowing four hits and three runs. Four other BSU pitchers appeared in relief, allowing just three hits and a run to the Cougars, who were held to seven hits and four runs.
The Beavers scored twice in the first for a 2-0 lead and after USF tied it up with two in the top of the fifth, BSU scored three in the bottom of the fifth and added two more in the sixth inning for an 8-3 lead.
Freshman Keehahn Coyle (0-3) took the loss for USF as he allowed six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Dan Johnson also worked one inning in relief (three hits, two runs).
Chris Thompson had an effective effort in game two for USF. He finished up with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.
The Cougars offense was led by Jarvis, who had two hits and an RBI. Durkin, Rehwaldt, Crow, Merriam and Peterson also had base hits for USF.
After BSU scored a pair of runs in the first with three two-out hits, USF rallied to draw within one with run in the fourth inning as Minnick's RBI groundout scored Jarvis. In the top of the 5th inning, Crow singled and moved to third on a double by Merriam. After a walk to
Gunner Peterson, Durkin's RBI ground out plated Crow. Griffing-Jarvis followed with an infield single to score Merriam and draw USF into a 3-3 tie.
BSU responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run home run by Lichty, who went deep for the second straight game. The Beavers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-3 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning, USF loaded the bases and Petersen, who had singled, scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-4.
