Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball Team (7-2, 3-1 NSIC) suffered through a difficult shooting night and had a six-game winning streak end in a 51-36 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) setback at Minnesota Duluth (4-2, 3-1 NSIC) on Friday.
In the North-South matchup, the Cougars received 11 points and eight rebounds from
Kaely Hummel and seven points and three assists from
Mariah Szymanski to lead the way. Hummel recorded her 47
th double-digit scoring game of her career. With the setback, USF dropped into a second-place tie in the NSIC South Division standings with Winona State at 3-1. The Cougars will look to rebound at St. Cloud State (5-3, 2-2 NSIC), which defeated SMSU, 72-60, on Friday.
UMD opened up a 22-16 lead at halftime and with a 29-20 advantage in the second half took a 51-36 decision.
Against UMD, USF made just 13-of-61 field goals for a season-low 21.3 percent as the two teams now sit 4-4 in their all-time series. USF, which made 4-of-5 free throws, was just 6-of-32 for 18.8 percent from three-point range. USF's previous low percentage shooting was 29.6 percent (18-of-61) against South Dakota Mines (64-49 road win). USF shot just 3-of-16 for 18.8 percent in the first quarter and was 3-of-15 for 20 percent in the second quarter for a 6-of-31 shooting performance at half. USF improved to 41.7 percent in the third quarter on 5-of-12 shooting but then fell off to 11.1 percent in the final quarter on 2-of-18 shooting.
While UMD, which had 13 points and eight rebounds from Katie Stark and 10 points from Brooke Olson, didn't shoot measurably better in the defensive battle, they made 17-of-53 field goals for 32.1 percent and had a huge edge in free throws with 15-of-22. The differences in field goal shooting (32.1-to-21.3) and made free throws (15-to-4) proved to be the biggest factor as UMD had just a 46-43 rebound advantage.
After Hummel hit a three-pointer with 2:25 to play in the first quarter, USF had an 8-4 lead. However, that would be the largest lead of the game for USF. In fact. USF did not score over the final 2:25 of the quarter, which had both teams tied at 8-8. And, the Cougars didn't score again until the 6:58 mark of the second quarter when they led, 10-8, after an
Augusta Thramer basket.
USF's defense held firm but eventually the offensive challenges of the night would cost USF. UMD took a 12-10 lead on a basket by Emma Boehm at the 5:03 mark of the second quarter. After USF tied it at 13-13,
Andie Mataloni made a three with 3:54 to play for a 16-13 lead for the Cougars. From that point on, UMD had a 9-0 run to close the half for a 22-16 advantage.
In the third quarter, UMD took control of the game as they opened the half with an 8-0 run with a jumper from Sammy Koslowski providing the Bulldogs with a 30-16 edge at the 7:14 mark. Hummel knocked down a three as the Cougars just the margin to 30-23 with 5:17 to play. UMD answered and extended the lead to 37-26 (3:23, 3
rd) before USF had a 5-0 run, including a three-pointer from
Anna Goodhope, to draw within 37-31 with 1:27 left on the clock. But USF couldn't sustain the run as UMD ended the quarter with a 40-31 lead as Koslowski converted a three-point play.
USF's offensive problems continued in the fourth quarter as UMD opened with a 5-0 run for a 46-31 lead with 5:49 to play. From there USF cut the lead to 10 points (46-36, 4:20, 4
th Q) but could draw no closer as they made just two field goals in the final quarter.
