DENVER, COLO – Led by strong pitching and hitting, Metro State (3-4), defeated the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (0-2), 14-3, claiming a victory for the second straight day in nonconference action.
With a solid outing from Cade Crader (1-1), the Roadrunners built an early lead and add to it all day. Crader worked five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five USF hitters. Three other MSU pitchers finished up as they allowed three runs on six hits. Dave Ortiz had five hits and three RBIs while five other MSU hitters had two hits as they racked up 19.
The Cougars were led by three hits and two RBI from junior first baseman
Josh Rehwaldt. Kole Levkin added a single and RBI for the USF attack.
Keenahn Coyle (0-1) started and took the setback as he allowed seven runs, including five earned, with seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Seven other USF pitchers took the mount including
Jackson Olson (1 1/3, four hits, two runs),
Alex Loosbrock (one inning, two hits, one run, strikeout),
Mitchell Lyall (2/3, three hits and two runs),
Christian Lazar (1/3, no hits),
Anthony Reese (one inning, no hits, no runs) and
Matt Graham (one inning, no hits, no runs, two strikeouts).
MSU opened the first with a pair of runs and added five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Cougars broke through against Crader as a walk and
Matthew Minnick single produced a scoring opportunity, which Rehwaldt took advantage of with a run-scoring single. USF added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Levkin's single scored
Ryan Bernardy who had walked.
USF and Metro State will conclude the series on Sunday with game time set for 1 p.m.
