USF Soccer returns home to face MSU Moorhead on Friday; will host Northern State on Sunday

SIOUX FALLS—The University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team will look to end a three-match losing streak when the Cougars return home to host a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this weekend at the USF Sports Complex. The Cougars (1-5-0, 0-3-0 NSIC) will play MSU Moorhead (1-4-0, 1-2-0 NSIC) on Friday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. and Northern State (3-2-1, 1-1-1 NSIC) on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.

Cougars fall to Augustana, 4-0
The USF Soccer Team fell to cross-city rival Augustana (3-1-1, 2-0-0 NSIC), 4-0, last Sunday in NSIC action. USF had several opportunities to end its scoring drought which has extended to two matches. The Cougars totaled 11 shots throughout the contest, seven of which came in the first half. USF's offense was led by junior Lauren LaFavre, who attacked the Augustana defense with four shots, two of which were on goal. LaFavre has a team-leading 16 shots on the season with a shot on goal percentage of .500. Juniors Lily McKown and McKayla Philippi each recorded two shots in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Brayden Paul accumulated nine saves during the match, pushing her season save total to 36 in six games. 
 
Series History
                Vs. MSU Moorhead
After a loss in the first-ever meeting between the two programs in 2012, the Cougars have not lost again to MSU Moorhead. Culminating 11 points after the last five matches, USF owns a 3-1-2 record against the Dragons. In Brittany Domino's time at USF, she has a 1-0-2 record against MSUM, earning a point in a 1-1 draw last year behind the lone goal scored by Morgan Lovato. USF is 2-0-1 against MSU Moorhead when traveling to Moorhead.
 
                Vs. Northern State
The Cougars are 1-4-1 against Northern State in their previous six matchups, including a 1-1-1 mark in home games. Most recently, the Cougars won their first contest against Northern State in an overtime thriller that ended in a 1-0 decision last year. The first three games in the series history against Northern State went to overtime, where USF tied NSU in 2012 and suffered losses in 2013 and 2014.
 
USF Offense continues to pressure
USF's offense is led by LaFavre has a team-leading 16 shots on the season with a shot on goal percentage of .500. Freshman Aundria Vargas has also accumulated 11 shots on the season, five of which were on goal for a .455 shot on goal percentage. Vargas also has scored one goal on the season. As a team, the Cougars have totaled 94 shots in six games with 52 shots on goal for a total shot on goal percentage of .553.
 
USF picked 12th in preseason poll
The University of Sioux Falls Soccer Team, which is coming off its best season at NCAA DII, has been picked to finish in a tie for 12th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), according to the 2018 NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released August 9. USF soccer had a program-DII-best 5-9-4 overall mark, and was 4-7-4 in the NSIC for 10th in the league in 2017. In the preseason poll, USF received 69 points and sits tied with Wayne State for 12th in the poll. The Cougars currently sit tied for 9th in the conference standings after four games.
 
Head Coach Brittany Domino leads USF
Brittany Domino enters her fourth season as the head coach of the USF Soccer program in 2018. During Domino's tenure, the Cougars have built up their defense and added offseason signings to bolster their offensive attack, which set Division II program records for goals, points, assists and nearly every statistical category. In her third season at the helm of the USF Women's Soccer program, Domino reached unprecedented territory for USF in their Division II era, finishing with a 5-9-4 overall record, 4-7-4 in the NSIC during the 2017 campaign. The Cougars finished with program-bests of five wins overall, four wins in NSIC games, and 16 total points in league play, tying them for 10th place, their highest finish in six seasons as members of the league. In 2017, Sioux Falls again improved on both sides of the ball, breaking their previous Division II USF program records in both goals scored and goals allowed. The Cougar coaching staff also includes Assistant Coach Kyle Halfpop who has been with USF for two years, and Gabe Wortman.
