Evans led four players in double-digits as USF Men's BB Team rolls past CSP, 95-64, for fourth straight win

Evans scores 29 points and draws close to 1,000 points at 986 for his career

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Trevon Evans scored 29 points and led a hot-shooting University of Sioux Falls Men's Basketball Team (12-4, 7-3 NSIC) to dominating 95-64 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Concordia-St. Paul (7-9, 2-8 NSIC) on Saturday night at the Gangelhoff Center.

The Cougars, which reached 90 points or more for the fourth time this season, recorded their fourth straight victory and second straight road win of 28 points or more. With the win, USF swept the season series against the Golden Bears and moved into third place in the NSIC South at 7-3. They sit just one game out of first place in the division held by Wayne State and Minnesota State at 8-2.

Evans, who had his 27th career 20-point game and third in four games, was one of four USF players with double-digit points. Senior forward Drew Guebert had 14 points, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks while redshirt freshman Chase Grinde had 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard Milan Surlic added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists and did not commit a turnover in 24 minutes.

USF opened on a 35-9 run and led 46-34 at halftime.  The Cougars, which led by as many as 33 points (95-62, 2nd half), outscored the Golden Bears, 49-32, in the second half for a 31-point victory which was the second highest margin this season.

"I was really proud of the guys this weekend," said USF Head Coach Chris Johnson. "We shot the ball really well tonight but our work on the defensive end was the key to this win and our winning streak," he said. "Now it is important that we get back to work Monday and try to build on this momentum," he said.

Led by Evans, the Cougars made 37-of-71 field goals for 52.1 percent as they shot over 50 percent for the fifth time this season. USF reached double-digits in made three-pointers as they hit 16-of-31 for 51.6 percent for the fourth occasion this year. USF's 16 treys was the second-best total of the season (17-34 vs Emporia State, Nov. 10).  For the 16th straight game, USF won the rebounding battle as they held a 43-31 margin over CSP. Twelve times this season, including tonight, the Cougars have had at least 11 or more rebounds than their opponents.

Evans, who raised his game average to 23.8 points per game, hit 11-of-24 field goals and tied a season-high with six treys on 12 attempts. He has scored 27 points or more for the fourth time in five games. In 31 minutes, he also had three rebounds and two steals. The senior guard from Wichita, Kan., is drawing closer to 1,000 career points with 986.

For the 82nd time in his career, Guebert had double-digits as he scored 14 points by hitting 5-of-7 field goals and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Guebert increased his career point total to 1,722 which ranks fourth all-time at USF. Grinde had one of his best shooting nights of the season as he made 5-of-6 field goals and his only three pointer in 27 minutes. USF had nine points and eight rebounds with a blocked shot from sophomore Teathloach Pal, who knocked in 4-of-6 shots from the field.

While USF's offense was dynamic and explosive against CSP, it was their defensive effort that made the biggest impact. USF's stout defensive effort included five blocked shots, nine steals and an effort that included 16 forced turnovers. USF also held CSP to 37.3 percent shooting on 22-of-59 field goals. The Golden Bears, which was led in scoring by Noah Kannegiesser with 15 points and Cody Carlson with 14 points, made 10-of-24 shots from three-point range.

Game Breakdown –
USF, which shot 52.78 percent (19-of-36) from the field in the first half, rushed to a 10-0 lead as Evans and Surlic hit three-point field goals. After the Golden Bears cut the lead to 13-5 (14:39, 1st half), the Cougars ripped off a 22-4 run to take control of the game at 35-9 with 5:53 to play after a lay-up by Justin Taylor.  Over the final five minutes of the half, CSP cut into USF's lead with a 23-to-11 run as Kannegiesser's lay-up with six seconds left drew the Golden Bears within 46-32 at halftime.

Like the first half, USF took control in the first five minutes of the second half.  The Cougars, which hit 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the field in the second half, used a 13-6 run to grab a 59-38 lead after a three-pointer by Evans at the 15:01 mark.  USF received a trey from Guebert as the lead drew to 65-41 with 10:46 to play. Another three from Evans gave USF a 73-44 lead with 8:28 to play as the Golden Bears couldn't stop USF and struggled on the offensive end.

When Surlic hit his second three of the game for an 82-55 lead and just 4:22 left, USF replaced its starters. Immediately the USF bench lit it up as freshman forward Wesley McCullough hit his first career three for a 30-point lead (85-55, 3:52, 2nd half). USF bench, which scored 13 points in the final four minutes, culminated its scoring on a three by Logan Dreier, who finished with six points. Dreier's triple gave USF its largest lead of the game at 95-62.

Next for USF will be home game at the Stewart Center against U-Mary and Minot State on Jan. 18-19.
