ST. CLOUD, Minn.- The University of Sioux Falls Volleyball team took to the court on Saturday against the No. 13 St. Cloud State Huskies. Despite the Huskies taking the match in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-23), the Cougars had history made on the court.
Junior Krista Goerger, a native of Mankato, Minn., came into the match needing only 36 assists to break Alexa Reed's record of 2,139 career assists for USF's Division II program history. Near the end of a very competitive third set, Goerger set up senior KaSandra Springer for a kill, a kill that gave Goerger her 36th kill of the match, and her 2,140th total in a Cougar uniform, putting Goerger on top of the record books in the category. Goerger finished the day with 37 assists.
Springer led the Cougars offensively with 17 kills, and finished with a double-double that included 16 digs. Freshman Brooklynne Albrecht also had a fine day with a .412 hitting percentage (8K-1E-17TA).
Defensively, senior Allie Maloney had a game-high 25 digs in the Cougars' effort.
The Cougars will have another midweek match, this time against No. 11 Southwest Minnesota State on Halloween. SMSU took No. 5 Minnesota Duluth to five sets, but succumbed to the Bulldogs in Duluth.
Albrecht and the Cougars were able to take Halenbeck Hall by surprise with a service ace, putting the Cougars ahead 7-5. Later in the set, Springer put down a kill to make it a 13-12 Huskies lead, but SCSU went on a 6-3 run that allowed them to gain the space needed to eventually take the set 25-20.
USF and SCSU started the second set by trading 3-0 runs and traded points up to a 4-4 tie. The Huskies, who climbed to a 13-7 lead, were met with a 5-1 Cougar run to make it a 14-12 score. The Huskies again built up a five-point lead, but the Cougars showed their persistency with three straight points to make it 20-17. The Huskies eventually got to a 23-19 lead, but the Cougars went on a 3-0 run to make it 23-22. With a 24-22 set point for the Huskies, a Springer kill and Huskies attacking error tie the match at 24 before SCSU took the final two points.
The Cougars came out of the intermission with a 6-2 run. The Cougars kept the momentum on their side, reving up to 13-8 lead. The Huskies had an answer for the Cougars' start to the third set, going on a 12-6 run to take a 20-19 lead over the Cougars. Both teams fought tooth-and-nail to a 23-23 tie, but the Huskies were able to finish a second straight set with the final two points of a set.
