USF Soccer drops heart-breaker to Minnesota Duluth

SIOUX FALLS- The University of Sioux Falls Soccer squad took on a stout Minnesota-Duluth squad in bitter cold conditions. A second half blitz by the Bulldogs dictated the result of the match, a 3-1 victory for the Bulldogs over the Cougars at the USF Soccer Pitch.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Taylor Kelley who scored the only goal for the Cougars. The assist on the goal went to freshman Jaycie Dillenburg. The Cougars took seven shots, two of which from senior McKayla Philippi, and one each from senior Becca Schmitz, freshman Alexis Naujokaitis, senior Lily McKown, Dillenburg, and Kelly's goal.

Senior Brayden Paul spent 82 minutes in the net, allowing three goals while also saving three more potential goals. Freshman Holli Knudsen spent the final eight minutes in the net and recorded two saves.

The first half had a sluggish start to it, with the first shot finally coming in the 11th minute from Lily McKown. All-in-all, there was only nine shots taken in the first half, with the Bulldogs holding a 6-to-3 tilt in that category in the first half.

The Bulldogs finally broke a scoreless draw in the 64th minute and added another goal in the 66th minute for a 2-0 lead over the Cougars.

As a light sprinkling of snow started to make its way to the pitch, Kelley cut the lead in half in the 74th minute in a skirmish for the ball. The Bulldogs iced the game in the 81st minute with a goal for a 3-1 lead.

USF will be back on the pitch on Friday when they travel to Upper Iowa, then will come home for their last home match on Sunday to take on Winona State.
