SIOUX FALLS- The University of Sioux Falls soccer squad had a historic outing on Sunday, defending their home pitch against former USF Assistant Coach Kyle Halfpop's Minnesota Crookston, scoring a program-best four goals to a 4-1 victory.
The squad, as mentioned before, scored four goals, only the third time a USF squad has scored four goals in a match. It also marks the first time the Cougars scored four goals in regulation of a league match (scored fourth goal in overtime against UMary in 2015).
Four different Cougars scored a goal, and two recorded assists. As a team, the Cougars outshot the Golden Eagles 14-to-2.
The historic night started in the ninth minute, with junior Olivia Valdez feeding the ball to Lily McKown who connected with the net. It took only eight minutes for the Cougars to strike again, with senior McKayla Philippi finding the net off a pass from freshman Alexis Naujokaitis. The Cougars were not done there, scoring a third goal two minutes later, this time from sophomore Catie Caruso.
The Golden Eagles were finally able to answer, scoring their sole goal in the 24th minute to cut it to a 3-1 Cougars lead.
Ten minutes had passed before freshman Grace Held returned the Cougars' lead to three with a 34th minute goal.
Next for the Cougars is a trip to Minnesota next weekend to face Concordia St. Paul and a sliding No. 4 Minnesota State.
