MARSHALL, Minn.— The University of Sioux Falls Soccer squad had a battle on its hands when they went to Marshall on Friday for their season finale against Southwest Minnesota State. The second half was chaotic with each team getting a goal, but SMSU would stun the feisty Cougars 2-1 in the closing seconds.
Senior McKayla Philippi led the offense, scoring the only goal of the match for the Cougars off a penalty kick.
Reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Goalkeeper of the Week Holli Knudsen had a solid performance, despite giving up two goals, as she faced a barrage of 18 shots, eight of which required a save from Knudsen.
The Cougars had a rough go of things in the first half, getting outshot by the Mustangs 11-to-1 which included the Mustangs' 44th minute goal from Alex Lotts.
Out of halftime, the Cougars appeared reinvigorated, and that fire led to the Cougars drawing a foul in the penalty box for the penalty kick. Philippi got the ball off and the equalizer into the net to make it a 1-1 match in the 73th minute.
The Mustangs were able to dampen the mood and avoid going to overtime when Mikayla Walters got a shot off at the 89:59 mark to get the go-ahead goal with a second left.
The Cougars finish the season 4-13-1 overall, 4-10-1 in NSIC, a tie for most wins in conference play, set in 2017 and matched in 2018.
