GOLDEN, Colo. – Despite a pair of solid pitching performances from sophomore righthanders
Brandon Roesler and
Alex Loosbrock, the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (0-5) dropped a nonconference doubleheader to No. 25 Colorado Mines (8-2) on Thursday at Jim Darden Field. USF lost, 3-2, and 4-1 as they fell to 0-5 on the season. The two teams will square off again on Friday at 1 p.m. for a single game.
The Cougars allowed just seven runs on 14 hits while recording nine strikeouts across 14 innings
. USF had a trio of solid offensive performances from sophomore
Kyle Gulbrandson, senior
Josh Rehwaldt and junior
Ryan Bernardy. Gulbrandson had four hits in six at bats and hit .667 on the day. Gulbranson, who is hitting .400 on the season, stroked a pair of doubles among his four hits. Bernardy hit his own and USF's first home run of the season, which was a two-run shot in game one. On the day, he was 3-of-5 for a .600 batting average. He had two RBI and seven total bases. Rehwaldt, who moved his average to .353 on the year, had three hits in six at bats and three total bases.
Colorado Mines 3 Sioux Falls 2 (7 innings)
In the opener, sophomore right-hander
Alex Loosbrock (0-1) had a second straight strong performance as he allowed just six hits and three runs with five strikeouts and two walks in the 3-2 setback. Loosbrock's only mistake was giving up a three-run home run to Gabe Garvens in the second inning. He held CSM scoreless over the final five frames. CSM's Tyler Blomster (2-1) picked up the win by allowing just two runs and six hits across seven innings with nine strikeouts.
Bernardy led the USF offense with two hits in two at bats. He had a double and then belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. Rehwaldt had a hit and Gulbrandson had a pair of base knocks as the Cougars had six as a team.
Colorado Mines 4 Sioux Falls 1 (9 innings)
Like Loosbrock in game one, Roesler had a solid outing on the mound in a tough-luck 4-1 loss to CSM in game two. Roesler (0-2) dropped his second decision of the season but allowed just seven hits and four runs across 7 2/3 innings. He had four strikeouts and walked just a pair of hitters.
Jackson Olson finished for USF and allowed just one hit. Walter Pennington (2-0) threw a complete game six-hitter for CSM. He allowed an unearned run and six hits in nine innings with six strikeouts.
USF's offense was paced by Gulbrandson with two hits and a run scored. Rehwaldt also had a pair of singles in three at bats while Bernardy and freshman centerfielder
Connor King also had base hits.
CSM opened the first inning with a pair of runs including a home run by Jace Selsor. Derek Daly's RBI double plated MIkey Gangwish as CSM took a 2-0 lead. USF answered with their unearned run in the second. Bernardy left off with a single but was thrown out after Gulbrandson doubled to left field. Gulbrandson scored on a throwing error by CSM.
After that, the teams didn't mount much offense until CSM put up a pair of runs in the eighth inning. With one out, Gangwish walked, stole second and scored on Joe Popp's double. Popp scored on Ben Stinson's RBI single to center field for a 4-1 lead.
