USF Softball splits doubleheader with Northwood and Rockhurst on second day of Florida trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEESBURG, FLA.— The University of Sioux Falls Softball Team (6-6) split a doubleheader against nonconference  opponents as part of their Florida spring break trip. In game one today, USF had a stellar starting effort from Kerrigan Hoshaw and defeated Northwood, 5-1 before falling to Rockhurst, 6-1 later in the day.
 
Game one: Sioux Falls 5, Northwood 1
In their first game of the day, USF was led by an impressive pitching outing by Kerrigan Hoshaw.  A senior from Apple Valley, Minn., Hoshaw tossed a complete game three-hitter as she allowed just three hits, one unearned run and struck out four. Hoshaw held the Northwood batters to a .120 batting average throughout the game.
 
USF's offense recorded five runs on eight hits with a .258 batting average.  Freshman Kylan Straight led USF with two hits in four at bats as the leadoff hitter while also driving in two runs and scoring once in the game. Sydney Nieveen, Lindsey Mossman and Hoshaw all had a hit and a run scored. Senior Emily Hove highlighted the USF offense with a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
 
Northwood jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Grace Dutoi hit a one-out double then advanced to third after a throwing error by USF. Dutoi scored off a wild pitch for an unearned run. 
 
USF responded in the third inning with three runs of their own on four hits while capitalizing on one Northwood error. Nieveen, Hoshaw and Mossman hit three singles in a row to load up the bases with one out in the inning. Francesca Mickelson reached on an error later in the inning to score Nieveen and advance Mossman to second and Hoshaw to third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Straight lined a two run single into left field to score Mossman and Hoshaw.
 
The game remained at, 3-1 until the fifth inning when Straight singled to center field and then stole second. Hove followed with her two-run blast to give USF a 5-1 lead.   
 
Game 2: Rockhurst 6, Sioux Falls 1
USF dropped game two as Rockhurst jumped out a 6-0 lead and then held off the Cougars to pick up the win.
 
USF freshman pitcher Kaitlyn VanDer Zwaag took the loss after going three innings and giving up four runs on three hits while striking out one batter. Junior Courtney Mathews pitched in relief in the fourth inning and allowed two runs in four innings of work with three strikeouts.
 
USF had four total hits in the game with two singles and one RBI coming from Nieveen, while Straight also posted two singles on the day. Straight also stole a base in the sixth inning.
 
Rockhurst scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, and four in the fourth to take a, 6-0 lead. USF gained one run back in the sixth to bring the score to, 6-1.
 
USF will have Wednesday off before facing Charlsetown (WV) on Thurday (March 14) at 11 a.m., and Merrimack at 1:15 p.m., in nonconference action.
