Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS—Senior
Kerrigan Hoshaw pitched her second career perfect game as the University of Sioux Falls Softball Team (11-14, 1-3 NSIC) split a doubleheader with Bemidji State (20-8, 3-1 NSIC) on Saturday (March 30). Hoshaw's gem combined with a strong offensive showing resulted in an 8-0 USF victory in game one before the Cougars fell to BSU in game two, 9-6.
Game one: Sioux Falls 8, Bemidji State 0
Hoshaw, a senior from Apple Valley, Minn., pitched a six-inning perfect game as she faced the minimum 18 batters and struck out 10 without issuing a walk. Hoshaw threw her second perfect game in USF history. She also had a perfect game on April 18, 2017 against Concordia-St. Paul.
In the win, USF recorded 10 hits in 29 at bats for a batting average of .344 in the contest. USF only struck out twice throughout the six innings of play and drew one walk.
Lindsey Mossman led USF with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Emily Hove and
Francesca Mickelson each added two hits with Mickelson providing two RBI and Hove, one. Â Freshman leadoff hitter
Lexie Swift had one hit in four plate appearances with one RBI and scored once.
Sydney Nieveen scored twice in three at bats with a hit.
USF opened the scoring in the fourth inning as
Ashley Meyer led off the inning with a single to center field. After Nieveen reached on a fielder's choice and
Emily Miller walked, Mossman cracked an RBI single to right field. After a throwing error by SMSU, both Nieveen and Miller scored. Mossman scored after
Kylie Madrid reached on a throwing error by the BSU third baseman, which provided USF with a 3-0 lead over BSU.
USF scored five more runs on five hits and one BSU error in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead and put the game out of reach. Nieveen, Mossman, Madrid, Hove and Mickelson each produced a single in the inning.
Game two: Bemidji State 9, Sioux Falls 6
Courtney Mathews got the start for USF in game two and took the loss after going seven innings allowing nine runs on 14 hits while striking out six and walking one. Mathews pitched 124 total pitches in the outing after facing 35 total batters. With the loss, Mathews brings her season record to, 5-6.
Mickelson highlighted the offense for USF in the second inning when she hit a solo HR (third of the year) to centerfield. Mickelson finished the game one of four with a run scored and RBI. Nieveen posted three hits with two runs scored, while Mossman was two of three and also scored a run in the ball game.
Kylan Straight provided two hits and scored a run out of the leadoff spot in the order.
Emmie Uitts had a hit in three plate appearances with two RBI and one run scored in the contest.
USF jumped on the board early in the game as they scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning behind four hits and three BSU errors. Mickelson led off the inning with a homerun to put USF on the board. Nieveen singled up the middle, Mossman reached on a fielding error and both were driven in by Uitts's RBI single. Straight singled and after a pair of BSU fielding errors, USF extended their lead to 5-0.
BSU began their comeback in the top of the fourth inning after they scored two runs on three hits but were stopped from extending their run by Mickelson who made a highlight reel diving catch in center field and then threw it to second base to record a double play to end the inning.
The Beavers continued their offensive prowess in the fifth inning with three more runs to tie the game up, 5-5. Lexi Derrick, Elaina Christiansen, and Jessica Burlingame each hit doubles in the inning.
USF responded in the bottom of the fifth inning after Nieveen walked, advanced to second following a Mossman single to right field, and scored on
Cassie Van Beek's RBI single as USF led, 6-5.
Bemidji tied the game in the sixth and scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead. Â Â
USF will turn around and face Minnesota Crookston (11-15, 0-2 NSIC) tomorrow in an NSIC doubleheader at Sherman Park beginning at 12 p.m.
