MINOT, N.D. – Despite two hits from
Josh Rehwaldt and a home run by
Ryan Bernardy, the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (4-22, 2-11 NSIC) dropped a 6-2 decision to Minot State (14-9, 7-3 NSIC) in the final of a three-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series at Corbett Field on Sunday.
The Cougars dropped the third straight game in the series as they have lost 4-0, 14-3 and 6-2. USF will now travel to Minnesota Crookston for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3 at 1:30/3:30 pm in Crookston, Minn.
MiSU had a strong pitching outing from Zach Newman (2-0), who allowed just two runs and six hits across three innings, to earn the 6-2 decision. Aaron Kern (two innings, no hits, three strikeouts) and Jack Gamba (one inning, two strikeouts no walks) finished for the Beavers, who won their fourth straight game.
Keenahn Coyle (0-5) started and took the loss for USF. He worked 2 1/3 innings while allowing six hits with three earned runs and had a strikeout. USF used five pitchers in the game including sophomore
Payton Livingston who closed the third inning by retiring both batters he faced. Senior lefthander
Mitchell Lyall worked 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Lyall now has a 0.00 earned run average with eight appearances and 8 1/3 innings of relief work. Lyall had a strikeout in his work on the mound. The Cougars also used freshman right-hander
Sean Nussbaum (2/3 inning, one hit, two runs, two strikeouts) and sophomore left-hander
Jackson Olson (one inning, two hits and run allowed).
Rehwaldt, who pushed his average to .333 on the season and his RBI total to 15, recorded two hits in three at bats.
Brennan Gabriel doubled and
Ryan Bernardy hit a home run as part of USF's six-hit attack. Jake Collins had two hits as did Wade Schlosser and Andrew Black for MiSU. Black had two RBI as the Beavers collected 10 hits on the day.
MiSU scored single runs in the first, second and third innings for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars responded as
Brennan Gabriel doubled and scored on Rehwaldt's RBI single. USF cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh inning after
Ryan Bernardy had his fourth home run of the season. However, MiSU put the game away with a three-run eighth inning as McDougal and Wilshire had RBIs.
