WAYNE, NEB. – Wayne State (27-9, 18-5 NSIC) used the long ball and a strong outing on the mound from Cade Hermann to turn back the University of Sioux Falls Baseball Team (9-27, 7-16 NSIC), 4-2, at Pete Chapman Complex on Sunday and sweep the three-game home series from the Cougars.
USF, which will host league leader Augustana in a midweek NSIC doubleheader at 4/6 pm Tuesday (April 16) at the Birdcage, had solid mound outings from sophomore starter
Alex Loosbrock (1-5) and relief standout
Christian Lazar.
Loosbrock (1-5) worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed six hits and four runs with three strikeouts in throwing 88 pitches. Loosbrock has a team-high 44 strikeouts after his performance against WSC. Senior left-hander
Christian Lazar took over in the fifth inning and after a balk struck out Peyton Barnes and induced Travis Miller to pop up the ball to first base to work out of a jam. Lazar has had another sterling relief performance. In 3 2/3 innings, he has allowed two hits with four strikeouts in 49 pitches. On the season Lazar now has a 2.57 earned run average in 16 appearances and recorded 33 strikeouts in 21 innings with just four walks.
USF was led on offense by
Josh Rehwaldt with a single and RBI and
Grant Lung with his team-leading 29
th RBI of the season.
Cade Herman (3-0) started and picked up the win for WSC. He allowed just five hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks in throwing 98 pitches to 26 batters across seven innings. Lawson Zenner finished for WSC and did not allow a hit in two innings while earning his second save. WSC's offense was led by Andrew Hanson with three hits while Bisenius had two hits, including a home run, and a RBI.
Kyle Thompson also hit a two-run home run and CJ Neuman a solo shot for the Wildcats.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, both teams broke through on offense in the third inning. After
Trey Hubers and
Connor King had singles, Rehwaldt hit an RBI single to plate Hubers. Then, King scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Lung for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Wayne State, the top power-hitting team in the league, received home runs from Thompson and CJ Neumann to take a 3-2 lead. In the fifth inning, Bisenius hit a home run to help WSC extend their lead to 4-2.
After that, the pitching on both sides from Herman and Zenner of WSC and Lazar from USF controlled the game.
