USF Soccer registers strong defensive performance and ties Augustana, 0-0 in 2 OT

SIOUX FALLS - The University of Sioux Falls soccer team had a booming defensive showing in their 0-0 tie with Augustana at the USF Sports Complex on Sunday.

Leading the Cougars offensively was senior midfielder McKayla Philippi who had all three of her shots going on goal. Sophomore midfielder Taylor Kelley also recorded a shot on goal, and the fifth shot for the Cougars came from senior defender Lily McKown.

The Cougars and the Vikings were evenly matched, despite the Vikings outshooting the Cougars 7-3. Both teams were able to make spectacular touches, but also ran into instances of wasteful touches, much like many soccer matches.

In the final 65 minutes, compassing the second half and both overtime periods, the defense really had to shine, with the Vikings outshooting the Cougars 14-2. Both teams had their own breakaway chances, but were unable to capitalize.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Wemhoff had two spectacular lunging saves, one right above her head, and one on the left side of the goal. In total, Wemhoff recorded 14 of the 15 Cougar saves on 21 Viking shots.

With the tie, the Cougars will return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Friday when they travel to Minnesota to take on the MSU Moorhead Dragons, followed by a match against Northern State in Aberdeen.
