Sydney Nieveen throws complete game but USF Softball falls to Stonehill

USF finished the Spring Games with a 4-2 record

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Despite a strong outing from senior right-hander Sydney Nieveen, the University of Sioux Falls Softball Team (11-8) dropped a 3-0 decision to Stonehill on Friday, March 13 as part of the Spring Games.

Stat Breakdown from Florida - With the setback, the Cougars finished their Spring Games trip at 4-2. In the six games, USF hit .260 as a team with a .331 OBP and a .455 slugging percentage. USF had seven home runs, including four by Frankie Mickelson, with 25 RBI and 70 total bases. Freshman Shayla Running was the leading hit with eight hits in 16 at bats and a .579 OBP. Mickelson hit .313 with five hits in 16 at bats and with her four home runs, she had nine nine RBI and a 1.063 slugging mark. She also had a .385 OBP with a team-high 17 total bases. On the mound, Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag was 2-0 with a 1.38 era with three appearances and two starts. She allowed just seven hits in 13 innings and allowed only two earned runs with eight strikeouts. Teams hit just .159 against her. Nieveen was 0-2 but had a 1.93 era in two appearances. She allowed 11 hits in 14 innings and five strikeouts. Freshman Hanna Cress was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA with four appearances and two starts. She had a shutout with 10 hits allowed and three earned runs in 12 innings and a team high 19 strikeouts. Opponent hit just .204 against Cress.

Game Summary - Nieveen (2-3) threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run (three total) on seven hits with a strikeout and two walks. Katherine Rayner (5-1) of Stonehill earned the win with a complete game five-hitter. She recorded six strikeouts and walked two USF batters.

Stonehill scored a run in the second, fourth and fifth innings to win the duel between Nieveen and Rayner. USF was hurt by three fielding errors.

USF had hits from senior shortstop Lindsey Mossman, freshman infielder Shayla Running, sophomore infielder Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag, sophomore Lexie Swift and outfielder Kylan Straight.
