Maggie Veenendall wins first career title as Women's Golf takes second place at Augustana Invitational

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Augustana Fall Invitational came to a close today with University of Sioux Falls Women's Golf's Maggie Veenendall taking her first career individual title with a career-best two-round total. Led by Veenendall and a third place finish from Paige Hillman, the Cougars placed second overall with a 60-over 636 (322-314).

Host Augustana won the team title shooting a 29-over 605 (304-301). In third place was Bemidji State at 55-over 692, while MSU Moorhead was fourth at 136-over 712, and Minnesota Crookston, fifth place, at 164-over 740.

Veenendall's four-over 148 gave her the first title of her career with a career-best total. She followed up a second place finish this past week at the Watkins Invitational with the title at the Augustana Invite. Coupled with Lexi Hanson's title at the Augustana Spring Invitational last year, USF has had back-to-back individual titles at the event. Two strokes behind Veenendall was a three-way tie for second place between Paige Hillman of USF, Molly Stevens of Augustana, and Natalie Young of Augustana at six-over 150.

Veenendall shot the best round of the tourney for all competitors with her second round one-under 71. Today's 71 is the second lowest score of her career, only bested by last week's two under 70. In the first round, the senior shot a five-over 77 that included seven pars plus birdies on the 364-yard hole 5, the 355-yard hole 9, and the 468-yard hole 18. Veenendall's second round featured 11 pars and four birdies: 361-yard hole 3, 452-yard hole 6, 355-yard hole 9, and 452-yard hole 10. Her four-over 148 stands as the best two round total of her career, it stands three strokes better than her previous best of seven-over 151 which she matched last week.

Paige Hillman finished the first leg of her freshman year with the highest finish of her young collegiate career at third place (a three way tie for 2nd with the tiebreaker bumping her to 3rd). Her six-over 150 was the best two-round total of her career. In the first round she carded a three-over 75 made of 10 pars plus a birdie on the 468-yard hole 18 and USF's only eagle this tournament, on the 452-yard hole 6. Hillman again shot a 75 in the second but had 13 pars and a birdie on the 355-yard hole 9.

Junior Annie Balduzzi tied for 11th place with her 20-over 164, which tied her career-best shot a year ago at the Augustana Invite and also in 2019. Her first round 81 tied a career-best and consisted of 11 pars. With nine pars in the second round she scored an 11-over 83.

Savannah Vincent shot 33-over at 177 to take 23rd place. Her first round saw five pars lead to a 20-over 92. Vincent shot a 13-over 85 with eight pars and a birdie on the 452-yard hole 6 in the second round.

Maddi Hanson finished with a 35-over 179 (89-90) that placed her 24th. She tallied seven pars in the first round and five in the second.

Ashley Tackett played individually and shot 27-over at 171 placing 17th for the best finish on her freshman career. Six pars and a birdie on the 132-yard hole 8 led to a 16-over 88 in the first round. Tackett followed that with an 11-over 83 in the second consisting of seven pars and a birdie on hole 8 again.

"It was a great day all around for us" said USF Head Coach Wade Merry "We've improved so much this season and it was great to see us capitalize on our hard work by taking second. Maggie and Paige played wonderfully and we're so proud of them for taking first and third. This was a good note to end on, we'll enjoy our break and be ready to pick up where we left off in the spring.

This concludes the Fall season for the USF Women's Golf team. Play will continue in the Spring with a to-be-announced schedule. Stay tuned to USFCougars.com and the USF Twitter page for updates.
