Van Der Zwaag and Thomas lead USF Softball to a sweep of Wayne State, 8-6 and 5-2

Van Der Zwaag won both games in the circle and Thomas hit .500 on the day

WAYNE, NEB. – Led by Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag and Kennedy Thomas, the University of Sioux Falls Softball Team (11-11, 5-3 NSIC) swept a doubleheader from Wayne State (3-17, 0-8 NSIC), 8-6, and 5-2, on Tuesday (April 6).

With the sweep, USF improved to 5-3 in the NSIC and back to .500 overall at 11-11. During their six-game road trip, USF won four games as they now sit in a tie for sixth in the league at 5-3.

Van Der Zwaag (5-4)had a big day for USF with two wins in the circle and a combined 2.56 earned run average. In throwing 13.2 innings, she allowed just five earned runs while recording 11 strikeouts against one walk. In addition, she had two hits and two RBI, including the tie-breaking hit that provided the difference in USF's rally to win game one. Then, she threw a complete game, five-hitter to lead the way for USF in earning the sweep and extending their winning streak against the Wildcats to five games.

Sophomore Kennedy Thomas had her best day at USF with four hits in eight at bats and had four RBI. She had two doubles which helped her to a .750 slugging mark. Her two-run single in game one helped USF tie the game. And, then Thomas had a two-run double to give USF an early lead in the 5-2 win in game two. Junior outfielder Kylan Straight also had a solid day with three hits in six at bats with two runs scored and two RBI.

USF Head Coach Shannon Pivovar was pleased with the way her team battled and earned two big wins.

"I am so proud of the way our team came together today to get a pair of wins, said Pivovar, whose team will host Winona State on Saturday, April 10 and Upper Iowa on Sunday, April 11 at Sherman Park. "We received contributions from every member of our team led by an amazing job by Kait (Van Der Zwaag) in the circle. She continued to spin and spot through the doubleheader and allowed our defense to work behind her – and with a handful of diving defensive plays – they did. It is as gritty of a performance as our team has put together this year. I am very proud of them," said Pivovar.
